This review is for the fair specifically. The fair grounds are great. However, the fair board should really reconsider a few problem areas most of us locals with families have with this event.
The rides are lacking, there was half as many as last year. The food is, for the most part, overpriced trash. I get they have to give you a 25% percent commission on top of the vendor fees. However, if you're charging top dollar, can we get some vendors who aren't just pumping out mediocre food for 15 to 20 a plate. Give some more local options to vend instead of whatever circuit of people follow the fair route.
Parking was either crazy far out or right in front. That was weird for us. One car ended up in the back by the museum, the other right up front by the midway entrance. It was strange the amount of politics and religion that I ran into in a day as well. The 1 to 2 hour lines for the few larger rides were great in the 95 degree heat. The hefty fees for liquids were also fun.
I get everyone is here to make money and expected to spend 300+dollars as always, but this year, we got way less than in years past in both experience and enjoyment. It's just something to consider when you're asking the public for money. Also, maybe a bit better vetting for vendors. Rat candy lady was unfortunate. I hope no one actually gets sick from that fiasco. I'm glad you shut her down after finding out.
It was not all negative at all, though. It still is the county fair. My kids rode rides from open til 10 pm. They made memories and had a great time. They both may have a bit of heat stroke still, lol, but it was worth it in their words. I'm sure these issues have been raised before, and nothing will come of my meaningless rant, but I'm sure I'm not alone in my sentiment. I'm headed to the state fair at the end of the months so I can decide if we even come back next year as a...
Β Β Β Read moreGreat family fun at the douglas county fair. We went with my parents, my husband and our 16 month old son to meet some animals in person get down on those once a year elephant ears, a few brewskys's and of course a shaved ice and umpqua dairy ice cream. The hot dogs were questionable but my husband found a great chicken sandwhich. The fries at 2 places were undercooked and massive portions so next time id find somewhere else to eat. We visited the animal barns, caught a few singing and cheerleading acts by the kids, blew some bubbles at the free bubble stand and overall had a safe and fun experience and my son finally got to meet a "duck duck" in person and pet a cow and a baby bunny. It was much cheaper than the fair I grew up with in Deschutes county and smaller in terms of how many vendors and people were there. It was much more relaxing and less stressful than bigger fairs but still had all the must haves that we look forward to every year. We didn't go over to the rides, but they still had about a dozen of the typical fair rides I could see coming in. Easy entrance with assigned parking, easy exit with no delays or waiting to leave. No outside food or water, (but we hid a baby waterbottle in my sons backpack for him) and a few vendors told us there was controversy over which vendors were allowed to sell water. A little concerning in middle of a hot summer and your waiting in food lines just to find out if you can get water but other than that we didn't come across issues with anything. We look forward to coming...
Β Β Β Read moreThe fair has changed so dramatically in the last 20 years that you hardly can tell or remember what it once was. It's bad enough the county has raised fees and all its parks making it difficult for those with low income to use as facilities. Now we have a fair where it cost nearly as much to park your car as it does to get in. Simply to walk in the front door cost you about $30 before you even done anything. While the fairgrounds does not set the standards for the cost of other items in the fair, they do make it impossible for any low prices or something reasonable Wendy who buying food or a drink. A bottle of water is $2.50, for a generic bottle of water. This same bottle of water you can buy a case of 35 for about $4 it's a total scam. The fair has lots of attractions, the security was amazing with the sheriff's department and police department look to be providing the majority of the security well done guys awesome. I am not sure how you can lower the prices of the fair and still provide good concerts, but I am not sure where the county fair Management in our commissioners think raising cost in such a small blue collar area and justify these costs. the attendance has been down at all of our parks, and even on the busiest day of the fair it was not that busy not compare two years prior. I think the county needs to sit down and rethink all these fees and come up with a better plan they have everything is becoming unaffordable can we go to the dumps with a trash can without having to take out...
