As someone who is a low income person, I was extremely disappointed in utilizing Kiwanis thrift store for furniture. If you read nothing else: please check out the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store to save your wallet and lower your stress levels. I went to Kiwanis after recommendations from (higher income) community members and I regret it. I should have continued to go to the Habitat Restore, and I tried Kiwanis to try to support another local org. Most things at Kiwanis that are affordable to someone lower income are dirty, broken, wobbly, unstable, and pretty much are at the end of their furniture life---aka need to be trashed. Some things will look semi decent on the sales floor but will be falling apart in a month after taking them home. Their prices, and the quality of their items, cater to their higher income clientele looking for "vintage" furniture or higher income folks who decide to be "minimalist". Anything "affordable" is sh!t that should've been thrown out and instead you will end up having to do the work that they should've. I didn't realize this about them since I am not from this area originally, however, I can now tell why the pricing of their items is the way it is. Most low income folks wallets and time cannot afford what they are doing. Since I think that low income people deserve to have affordable things that are also durable, I will steer anyone in my income bracket away from Kiwanis for these reasons. I have to budget to replace several items I got from Kiwanis less than two months later. I've gotten some smaller items (tables and nightstands) from Habitat Re-Store before and they have lasted over a year without any issues. Habitat Re-Store prices are consistently low, the quality of furniture is awesome, and their stuff is sturdy and clean. You can easily furnish a living room for under $150 at Habitat Re-Store if you are smart. Hopefully my mistake is someone...
Read moreIt's a great function obviously. Because they have things, people can use to better their personal lifes. However, Debbie , the lady standing at the register. Was so unbelievably rude. The person that I was with, Walked away for just a second.I was checking out some of the glassware. She was at the register. ( And this is my first time,I already noticed her/ other volunteers glaring at me when I came in ) .And Barbara the woman who was helping us out. Walked away. So I just stood there.. Debbie behind the register. Calling me. And I walked to the register. Not knowing what she was going to say.. She flat out told me I had to leave! I didn't know why. So I just turned my back and walked away and waited for my worker, and Barb who was helping us... Debbie ended up telling Barbara in front of me, that I cursed her. Which was a complete fabrication. I of course defended myself. Getting more irritated when she said that. She of course said that's what she thought she heard. Barbara had the nerve to tell me I should be grateful. I'll let everyone in front of me know of course I am. But you're not going to be talking to me like that. Everything I thought was de-escalated. Debbie continued to stare at me as if trying to intimidate me. I almost just told them they can have all this stuff. But I took all my time finding really good choices. And that's another thing it was almost like they didn't want to give it to me because I have good taste. Apparently Debbie ,treats a lot of people like this. Take deep breaths, and stay close to the people you're with. Because Debbie is something else. And a lot of the other white volunteers just be careful. I'm all for everybody equally. But these volunteers be acting like they're...
Read moreI wish I could scream this from the rooftops: Kiwanis Thrift Sale is one of the best thrift stores that I've ever been to. Their book section is the best I've ever seen, but I'll get to that in a minute. The staff here are so friendly and wonderful, you could easily strike up a conversation and share a laugh. Truly remarkable people. The line... You guys, their line moves so fast. It's incredible.
Anyways, their stuff. They have a TON of great things and the prices are better than anywhere I've ever been. I found so many cool things and ended up walking out the door after spending $30.
Their book section deserves its own paragraph. The books are my favorite things to look through at a thrift store and the book section at Kiwanis was amazing. First of all, it has its own room. In this room is virtually a library. They have everything organized by topic and then by author so it's super easy to go through (please put the books back in the right spot). I found some really neat copies of really really old and interesting books. I could spend hours just in the book section.
Their furniture section is really good to, and the prices are the best. I bought an entire shelving unit for my plants at home for $15. Two helpful guys helped me load it into my car.
Bottom line: Go to Kiwanis...
