We were moving from out of state and so I had to coordinate our moving company and storage company ahead of time. I worked through all the details so that everything was clear and the two companies would work together. I rented a storage unit with all agreements made verbally since I couldn’t come in person to sign anything. Then, the night before our moving truck arrived, the storage company let me know they’d implemented a $350 access fee (more than one month’s rent - and I’d already paid more than a month for an empty unit to reserve our space) just over a week before our arrival. It did not matter that our moving company (the reputable Mayflower) had listed Sequim Self Storage on their insurance for the day and was taking full responsibility for any damages - which did not occur anyways. They said because we had no signed agreement at the time that I had started renting from them, that they could enforce this new policy on us and they wouldn’t let our truck on the premises until we paid up. It was robbery. The saleswoman who had set us up initially had no power in the situation and could not honor the warm welcome and agreement she had put in place earning our trust in their facility. On top of that, the owner would not talk to us over the phone or in person and made his staff handle the situation. They also threatened that if we didn't get our stuff moved out by those 10 days they would put our stuff on the street corner. Attorneys I have talked to even at this is illegal and they also refused to give me my deposit back upon move out and here it is 2 weeks later still haven't received it.
