When I was living in Kenai, I would only go here to get my seafood. What a wonderful place! Sure, the showroom was pretty much standing room only even if there were three customers there, but if you need something that wasn't scrawled on the wall in terms of availability, just ask them! Many times I've immediately changed my party menu because something I didn't know they had they had!
I now live in the upper deserts of SoCal, and what passes for seafood is anemic, pathetic, and frankly stinks. So here I was feeling very sorry for myself, especially since I had been ordered by my physician to eat more seafood, I recalled GAS and wondered what could be going on at the moment. Guess what? A wonderful phone-in-only sale on salmon burger meat!! So I called, and by the time I was finished, I had bought ten pounds of 95% boneless sockeye (I like ANY kind of salmon, folks! Turning up your nose to certain salmon species is a shameful waste of great food!), salmon burger, my favorite cold-smoked lox, and my all-time treasured honey-smoked king salmon! They shipped the box out yesterday. I got it this morning by 1030! Everything was rock-hard frozen, including the ice pack! Guess what? FREE SHIPPING via Fed-Ex!
Sandra, whom I talked to over the phone, was über-friendly, tuned into my brain wavelength, suggested what I really wanted (the smoked king salmon wasn't on my list). When I called today to let her know I received the box intact, I discovered that I could get my favorite king crab knuckles which I certainly will order next time! (I make a mean king crab scampi!)
I highly recommend doing business with this company. Before you discount its pricing for mail order, keep in mind that what I received from Great Alaska Seafood today are days younger than what I will find at Costo (which is already thawed and decomposing in the open freezer case!) and taste SO much better. Also, being wild-caught, this salmon (and any of the seafood they have) are far more healthy for you than farmed salmon by far! (This isn't just my opinion but the determination of many studies on the internet.) The sockeye fillets I bought are just perfect single-serving sizes for most dishes, and a little goes a long ways! And I can't wait to try the lox on my favorite bagel!
I know many reviews don't come with recipes, but this one will! This is my friends' favorite appetizer I make for any get-together I host at my place:
Honey-Smoked Salmon Rangoon
1/4 pound Great Alaska Seafood honey-smoked king salmon, flaked 1/4 pound cream cheese, softened 2-3 scallions, minced Egg roll skins Vegetable oil for deep-frying
Mash together smoked salmon, cream cheese, and scallions until smooth and well-combined. Transfer a few tablespoons along one side of an egg roll skin, leaving a one-inch margin on the three sides. Roll the long side of the egg roll until the filling is fulling enrobed then fold over the short edges over and roll up like an egg roll or a cigar-shaped burrito. Dab water on the far end of the egg roll skin before rolling up completely and seal the remaining free edge. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
In a large and deep skillet or a Dutch oven, pour in one inch of vegetable oil. Bring oil up to 365°-375°F. Deep-fry a few rolls at a time, careful not to crowd which will reduce the cooking temperature. Rotate rolls occasionally until egg rolls are golden brown delicious. Remove from oil and drain on a cooling rack covered with a few layers of paper towels.
Serve hot or warm with sweet and sour sauce, duck sauce, plum sauce, or Thai sweet chili sauce...
Read moreI am a repeat customer - not as repeat as I would like to be - but I am not a huge fish eater - HOWEVER - on my many trips to Alaska, it is all I will eat when I am there. I live in the desert, gone to our stores, and do not like the looks. I am sorry but the fish out the Pacific Northwest has a different taste than any other (Atlantic or Gulf). With this beingn said, I order from them and Taku Store in Juneau. Taku is focused on Salmon, Halibut, Shrimp/prawns, and occasionally King Crab (depends on season) and they have a restaurant - mmm good. What gets me to come to Great Alaskan Seafood is location and 1) the variety 2) the seafood cakes - OMG - grilled are delicious. They are the first too go at a BBQ (which we can still do here in Southwest even in the winter). 3) Shrimp - described to the tee - and now I am hooked on the taste. I like other white fish and even looked at Seattle Seafood Market but nothing really beats it.
What I love even more is the insurance. Because it happened to me recently on an order to the point that I was in tears because the only way I will eat fish is when I order it directly and get it so fresh. Now, with the insurance, I have peace of mind.
I will be up in Soldotna in September and going to give it a try of catching my own but if I do not have luck - I will just stop by, have them ship for me. Win-win....but yes, I am extremely critical.....so I definitely recommend them will...
Read moreI placed my first order with this Company yesterday. After not receiving an email confirmation I called to follow up. The woman who answered the phone was very rude and continued to tell me they did not have have my order even through there was a charge on my card. She would not allow me to talk or try to explain what I thought happen. She spoke over me multiple times and then told me since I was incapable of understanding what she was trying to tell me she would transfer me to a manger.
The manger was extremely kind and helpful and after actually listening to what I had to say figured out what happen in a matter of 1 minute. I'm grateful for the manger but feel that people who answer the phone for any business need to be kind and professional.
This worker needs to be re-trained and work on her patience and customer service skills. I'm not someone who normally writes reviews but she was so short and rude and implied that I was stupid(when she was the one who was wrong) that I felt it was necessary.
I'm exited to try the food I have heard wonderful things and thanks to the manger I would order again. If I ever needed to call back and she answered the phone I would request to speak with someone else...
