I first discovered Made by Hand in the late 1990’s while on vacation at the beach. I remember walking in and immediately feeling that I had found someplace really special. I had never been in a shop like this before, with acoustic music from some far-off land playing in the background as my eyes feasted upon the beautiful handmade items on the shelves, walls and ceiling of the store. I had never heard of Fair Trade before. Of course, Marco explained the concept so well that day and with so much love for the artisans from all around the world who created the wonderful pieces of colorful jewelry, ceramics, clothing, handbags, wooden bowls, grass baskets, gorgeous wall hangings, wooden bird feeders, wind chimes, musical instruments... the list goes on and on. Ever since that first year, I eagerly anticipate my annual visit to Made by Hand when I go to the beach, because I always look forward to what I will discover there and learn from Marco and Kimberly. It’s so reassuring to know that I am supporting craftsmen and artists from around the world who are working to create better lives for themselves and their families, all while getting paid a fair price for their unique skills and hard work. I really admire what Marco and Kimberly have established in Made by Hand... a peaceful, heart-filled shop/sanctuary that is helping people, many from third-world countries, establish a new sense of financial freedom for themselves. It’s an art gallery, an inspirational experience and all made by hand. Marco and Kimberly are the kindest couple who could own such a wonderful place to find treasures for everyone! I spend a good hour or so wandering around, listening to beautiful music, seeing something new everywhere I look! When I shop here I become immersed in cultures from around the world. I never feel pressured or rushed. They have been in Bethany since 1996 and my family has visited every year!! I don’t shop anywhere else. This store is made beautiful not only by the fair trade items they sell, but also by the staff. I wanted to have something delivered to someone that lives near the store, and I am hours away. I called and Marco and Taunya spent a long time sending me pictures of items to decide between, packed them up in a gift bag and walked them to the nearby recipient on the spot. I have been shopping here for years during beach visits, and the shelves are always filled with beautiful handmade treasures from around the world, and priced affordably.
