We adopted our pup from Safe Haven in late March 2017 and he was one of many dogs that come on a Flight for Fido rescue mission from Oklahoma. As far as shelters go the staff was friendly and the facility was relatively clean.
We noticed Duncan had a slight cough which I assumed was kennel cough. I know enough to know it’s not fatal but should be reviewed by a vet. We took him to our family vet and confirmed he not only had kennel cough but giardia and coccidia as well. A 5 days dose of Panacure was on order. I called the shelter to let them know as all three conditions are contagious and he was sharing a dog run with his litter sister Tulip. The person I spoke with had little idea what I was talking about. She never asked how my pup was doing or if there was any way in which they could be of help. Never said they were sorry I got a pretty sick little puppy. The next Monday I did receive a call asking how my pup was doing and this person had no idea my little guy had been so sick. When I explained all that had happened her response was “wow”. No, gee I’m sorry to hear that, or hope he gets better soon. I explained they should check his sister because it was a good chance she too was sick. I got the impression this person wanted to get off the phone with me as quick as possible. I have never received a follow up call either.
I have very mixed feeling about the rescue me program where they bring in dogs from kill states to shelters in no kill states. I don’t want to see any pups euthanized, but the way in which these animals are transported is extremely stressful and is a haven to spread disease. Also, the sheer volume of animals makes it so the shelter needs to move them out as soon as possible. The shelter could have easily tested for giardia and would have had many positive results. They just passed that onto the new owners to deal with. Also, they let me take my pup home before he was scheduled to be neutered. Well he was too sick to be neutered so that will happen at a later date. Safe Haven is basically a clearing house for pets with little regard if your new family friend will he healthy or not. Also, if they were really interested in stopping animals from ending up in shelters they should not release dogs / cats until they are neutered or spayed. Don’t get me wrong, we have had our pup for a month now and we adore him, but I cannot in good conscience recommend Safe Haven. It truly is...
Read moreI was pretty disappointed with my experience. It was the second time I've adopted from Safe Haven. They charged me $360 for a dog that was supposed to be 9 months old, so more than if he'd been an older dog, and double what the Humane Society in my town, that offers the same thing when you adopt, does. Turns out he's more like a year and a half in age, according to the vet, and they knew it - he'd gotten his rabies shot almost a year before we got him, they thought he was nine months old then, not now! They also said he was current in his shots but failed to mention he'd be due for another rabies shot within a couple of weeks. Then, to top it off, within hours of getting him home, he started coughing, like he had kennel cough. I called the vet, they said make sure that Safe Haven will cover the cost of a vet visit since it was so soon after adopting him. Safe Haven's customer service lady looked at me with this sarcastic look on her face and proceeded to tell me I was basically out of luck because I signed off on it and assumed all risk when I did. I agree to that, but obviously the dog was already ill unbeknownst to me. It's not like he contracted an illness and became symptomatic on the car ride home. Even the vet office said, this isn't right! Also, my mom brought a puppy home whom they claimed was "shy" that dog wasn't shy, he was vicious - he was scared to death, and became extremely aggressive because of it. Come to find out he'd already been returned twice before for the same reason and they knew it and didn't tell her. I mean, he was dangerous. And, of course, they kept her money and told her since she signed a paper, she was also out of luck. I hope the dogs get adopted, its not their fault, but the way this place is run, and people who are trying to do the right thing are treated, is dishonest at best. Will...

(NOTE: I have years of experience dealing with Safehaven. I have turned in many stray, and feral kittens/cats PAYING each time. I have volunteered and taken their animals into my home, i have donated months/hours of time and $1,000's of dollars by providing for them. Here is my assessment......)

PLEASE UTILIZE THEM AND DONATE TIME AND MONEY. THESE SMALLER PLACES ARE WORTHY OF YOUR HELP- SAFEHAVEN DEFINITELY NOT!! (They need a revamp of attitude, Ed, staff/volunteers, practices and training)
