During my last round at CW one of the guys I was paired with said I needed to try Blackhorse GC, that it was the best course that was close to me. So I decided to give it a try. Boy was he right!!
On 7/2, as I was driving up to the club house at 7:30 am, the first thing that stuck out to me was the course maintenance. People were mowing the fairways and raking the traps. I know this shouldn't be a big thing, but I have never seen, not once, a person rake the traps at the other courses I've played. So, BH immediately had 1 star before I even parked my truck.
As I looked around at the facilities, I walked over to the driving range to see how it looked. It is by far the best I've seen in the area. It is a top notch facility, which is included in the green fees. Thus another star for BH.
From here I made my way in to the club house , but stopped to admire the golf carts which had pillow style seats. You can tell these were not your typical beat up golf carts. Another plus.
As I made way in to the clubhouse I was immediately greeted by the gentlemen by the counter with a friendly smile. BH has a great looking clubhouse with a lot to offer. I told the man I was new to the area and wanted to try the course. He said sure and said he prefers the south course although both are top notch and proceeded to describe the two courses to me. Another star for customer service and making a great first impression.
Now for the course. As I stated before I absolutely love Cypresswood, and after playing the south course it had the same theme. From the Black Tips, you need to be very accurate off the tee. The fairways are narrow and I found myself most of the time in the first cut only hitting 7 fairways.
The fairways are perfect and well taken care of. They were soft enough for irons to easily take a divot but firm enough to allow for balls to roll down the fairway.
The greens were just as impressive. They were large greens that were receptive to approach shots, even log irons/hybrids. Playing from the tips, I had a few 200 yard approach shots, as well as long par 3s. In the morning they weren't rolling fast which is expected with the morning dew, but they became firmer and a little faster towards the end of the round. If I had to guess I would say they were rolling about an 8 to 9.
All in all I was very happy with all aspects of this course and walking away with a 76 made it even more enjoyable.
If your looking for a 5 Star course that delivers on customer service, course quality while challenging your game and course management skills, look no further.
Thanks Blackhorse for such a memorable...

My foursome played the South course on a Wednesday afternoon. I’ve played at Blackhorse (both courses) many times over the years since they opened. They made us tee off on the back 9 (due to a tournament). About half of the greens on the back 9 were in terrible shape. Tons of hardpan as well. Tee boxes were really bad as well (weeds, hard as a rock, etc.).
When we finished the back 9, we went to tee off on #1, and there were two groups in front of us teeing off. Like hitting a brick wall. Front 9 was in better shape, but a glacial pace after having no one in front of us on the back 9. I know that’s part of golf, but for us amateurs, it’s not an easy adjustment to make. Did you not know there were groups who teed off on the back 9, and we would be making the turn? And don't use a tournament as your excuse. If it was going to be stacked up, don't offer the tee time we received knowing your tournament would still be going on.
Our round cost $120. On a weekday afternoon. Really? Plus, we had to pay for range balls. I’m surprised there were tees in the cart. I had played Blackhorse so many times in the past, I did not check Google reviews (my bad). And Blackhorse management, don’t tell me we’ve had bad weather, etc. In the past month we’ve had abundant rain and sun. It is so obvious that you’ve turned this awesome facility into a money machine, and the maintenance budget is Spartan at best. Supply and demand. We lost Bear Creek, Old Orchard, River Ridge and other courses in the west side of Houston. I’m a capitalist. I know you guys have to make a profit, but it’s ridiculous and shameful to let this great tract get as rundown as it is. You’ve lost four long time customers, and we obviously will inform our golf friends that Blackhorse is not worth playing (at least for $120). It was worth about $60 to play...
