Extra Space Storage — Local services in Thornton Township

I’ve been with this company since April 2024-July 2025 My items in my storage unit was completely ruined due to rat droppings. There is a serious infestation that occurred in my storage unit. I am a college student who lives on campus in a apartment that needs to be furnished which I was using extra space to hold my items and I absolutely don’t want to use nothing that was stored in this unit.

Me or my mom was not once notified about the infestation and if we were told earlier, we could’ve prevented this situation. I am highly upset and devastated and disgusted. As I mentioned I am a college student so I can’t afford new furniture, appliances, and clothes that were ruined at this company. I absolutely don’t feel safe cleaning and reusing these items. I researched the side effects of rat droppings and seen “Rat droppings can carry various diseases that can be harmful to humans. These diseases can be transmitted through contact with the droppings, or by consuming food or water contaminated by them. Some of the most notable diseases associated with rat droppings include Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Salmonellosis, Rat-Bite Fever, and Leptospirosis”.

This situation is negligence. The store manager and the staff failed to inform me and my mom about this situation.

Also, whenever we were a few days late, we would receive multiple calls and texts from the staff pertaining the bill and late fees. The calls and consistent texts almost felt like harassment from this company hence why we moved storage units. Staff would reach out, make multiple calls to my phone & send numerous texts so changing storage companies gave me a peace of mind. Also, the rent would go up after 2-3 months once we were told we would be paying a certain amount.

Since my things been in this rat infested company over a year I don’t want any of my things. I had a mattress that wasn’t fully covered, a couch with pee stains, a dresser and night stand that is completely dirty with multiple rat droppings and dead bugs, shoes ruined with rat droppings. I’m throwing everything out. I have to buy new clothes, new shoes, new everything. I leave for school in August and I have nothing. I made sure I paid the bill although some months I was late which is because I am a college student with limit hours to work. Although I was late paying the bill multiple times I still managed to pay and I deserve clean items. I didn’t think there would be any problems while having my items stored inside so I didn’t think to fully wrap my things. I am so hurt and I feel like I lost everything. I need the maximum amount of insurance for my unit. I am throwing everything out. If nothing can be done I will be seeking legal help. I already filed an...

If cost is any consideration, avoid this place. They will sell you on a cheap rate and quickly raise it after you spend the money to move things in. I chose it because it was close to my work so I liked the convenience. The cost was competitive enough at about $126 for a 10 x 20. After 4 months and having all of my things moved in, they raised the rate by nearly 40% to $174. It would take several hours and cost around $400 to move my things to another location, so the $50 price increase is just low enough to make me hesitate relocating to a more reasonable facility.

All of the reviews about the people that work at this location are valid - they are friendly and helpful, but lets be honest, for a storage unit, other than signing the contract, how much interaction will you have with these people? Storage is about cost and location. Considering the fact that they know there is a high 'cost to change' - they take advantage of their customers by having them move in under a teaser rate and quickly jack the price up.

At the very least, if you plan to move here, expect your rates to go up $50 in the first few months ($600 increase on an annual basis). If this is still the place you choose, then this review is nothing to for you to worry about but if you're comparing price, please take this into...

I have been planning to write this review for quite some time, and putting it off far too long. :)

I want to commend the staff, and especially the manage, at this location for being very attentive to my needs. The staff are friendly, professional, and go above and beyond in assisting you with your needs or services. I have been a resident for a long time, and I trust the staff with my needs. You will be afforded the same attention and courtesies that I have received throughout the years using this storage facility. In this day and time, it is much appreciated working with staff and employees who are friendly and professional, respectful, polite and considerate. Working with the public and being in customer service is not always easy, though the employees at this site make working with you seem effortless.

I encourage everyone to visit the Extra Space Storage at the South Holland location on 160th Street for your storage or services needs. I have been pleasantly pleased throughout these years, and I am sure you will be also, storing your personal items or whatever your storage needs.
