A couple of years ago, we started the arduous process of selecting a custom log home company to build our first (and last!) home on our farmland. In order to make a well-informed decision about such a huge investment, we diligently searched reviews, spoke with couples who have taken on the same adventure, and visited the log home show in Kansas City. During our search we came across Golden Eagle Log Homes. We were immediately impressed with their plans and website and decided to visit their showroom in Wisconsin and participate in a day long educational event which included a bus tour of several log homes. It was during this event that we decided to choose Golden Eagle, and, if at all possible, to purchase a “complete” log home package, using the quality materials and vendors they offered in the showroom. We set up an appointment to meet with Jeff Heeg and were impressed with his attention to detail and the passion he showed about helping us develop plans for our dream home. He was respectful of our unique wishes, paid excellent attention to detail, and was kind and welcoming. After we put our deposit down and the process began, we feared we would quickly feel overwhelmed with all of the decisions that needed to be made. Jeff and the Golden Eagle team assisted us at every turn. The online selection packet, with links to materials, was immensely helpful in the process. The building process was anything but routine—the COVID pandemic made it a long and troublesome process, fraught with supply chain disruptions and required substitutions and changes beyond what we would have hoped for pre-pandemic. Our journey started by meeting Jeff Heeg at the Lake Home & Cabin Show in Madison, WI in January 2018. We were negotiating for an 80 acre wooded parcel near Norwalk WI that included a 25 acre pond. Among the exhibitors at the show, GE stood out because of the quality of workmanship and the ability to offer a turnkey building process.

By May 2018, we had closed on the land, signed a contract with GE and found a general contractor who is very familiar with the GE product and process. The design process was challenging for our family of six (grandparents, son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters), but made easier and fun by choosing most options at the GE headquarters near Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Your staff was very helpful by listening closely to our ideas and then making suggestions to accomplish our goals. The final floor plans were detailed and specific enough to guide all sub-contractors in their roles.

One of the highlights of our cabin was the customized carving on the central beam, you offered as an option early in the design phase. We were able to work with the professional wood carver, who performed his art on the 10”x10” log before it was installed in the structure.

Materials were delivered in a timely fashion. We had no major issues with the quality of the whole logs and other building supplies for our 1874 s.f. cabin, including a loft and a full drive-under basement. Our only issue was the delivery and installation of the wrong loft railing. GE replaced this railing and covered the extra cost of our general contractor’s labor.
