Played this track yesterday, 02/09/2025.
I had a lot of fun playing this challenging Robert Trent Jones-designed course despite the numerous issues that were previously raised by other golfers.
Before I go into the significant issues, let me point out what I liked about this track.
First off, the views of the water from the barrier islands were beautiful but also treacherous for golfers.
Water is in play on 10 holes distributed evenly on the front and back nine but none more treacherous than the signature hole # 16, where I scored a 10 with 2 water balls on my second and third shot off the right rough using my Callaway Paradym mini driver.
I'll probably be coming back if only to play this spectacularly difficult hole again.
The bones of Jones' design of raised and tilted greens are still there despite the mismanagement of the course.
His design bumped up the difficulty level and also made really good use of the water hazards for doglegs with some fairways bordered with water on both sides.
As a 17 cap, I was thrilled that despite the challenging course, I still had 4 Birdie chances that day, making a 6 footer for 1 of 4, while missing a couple by being short by mere inches (1 inch on one hole and 2 inches on another) and had painful lip out from 29 feet.
Another positive was that the town invested in new restrooms and the newly paved parking lot.
The staff were friendly and provided free yardage books.
Now for the negatives.
The aeration was the worst I've seen in the last 4 years, with the holes left bare with no sand used to plug the holes. This confirms the other reviews that were made months ago.
This was also evident in at least 4 holes.
Another significant issue is the geese droppings throughout the course and more so on the greens.
It was so bad on the greens that I had to spend at least 5 minutes clearing a path with my shoes (spikeless) just to have a decent path to putt and this happened on at least half of the holes.
Hole rotation may also be an issue as I don't think that the holes have been rotated in a long time, as shown in my pic of hole # 16.
Most of the holes had dirt cart paths reinforced with stones, but as a walker, this was not an issue for me when I played yesterday but I think this will be an issue during summer time with the dust kicking up.
Bottomline, for $60 as a non-resident coupled with the current conditions, playing at this course was not worth it.
However, things may change pretty soon as the course is up for bidding to replace the town-managed team, so hopefully whoever takes over will do a good job restoring this course to at least an acceptable...
Read moreThis course has definitely changed over the years, and not all for the better. I was a little surprised to see the clubhouse gone and replaced with trailersâit feels more temporary than welcoming. The driving range gave me serious Tin Cup vibesâbeat-up but at least functionalâand Iâll give them credit for having lights if youâre practicing later in the evening.
On the positive side, the greens were actually in good condition for a public course, which made the round enjoyable. That said, the practice putting green was rough, with burnt patches of grass that killed the experience before even teeing off.
Overall, itâs playable and has its moments, but the atmosphere has slipped compared to years past. If youâre just looking to get in a round or some evening practice under the lights, it works. If youâre expecting the full club experience, you might leave a little...
Read morePlayed 7/17/25. First time there, joining friends who are regulars. I was very impressed with the conditions of this public, municipal owned and operated course. Strongly disagree with recent reviews which had me concerned. Fairways well maintained and in very good condition; of course this âbeachâ golf course is scrubby off the fairways. Yes the bunkers are not well maintained but thatâs mostly based on customer usage and lack of attention. The greens are excellent. Slow as expected for a public course but minimal ball marks, grass in great shape and the putts roll true. Be aware that thereâs no snack shop and no water on the course except 1 water fountain in the building which is near tees 4/7/18. Pricing for a non resident is extremely fair. Easy to walk. Will be more fun when I return knowing the...
