Overall, the gym is great you have everything you need to make a change in your life today. It's a big gym with lots of potential but a perfect score is ruined by equipment management as of mid 2024.
In the last 15 years, they have spent TONS of money on new equipment and facility space but they've wasted all that buying duplicate machines and never servicing or upgrading old machines; just moving them to a new corner. This creates a cluttered, poorly optimized space with surprisingly little variety in what workouts you can do.
In that same amount of time they never even upgraded or took apart and cleaned the one and only water fountain in the hallway near the pool. Its got very questionable water quality and poor pressure from all the buildup in the pipes. They have finally added a second fountain in the last few years when in a facility the size of this one should have a minimum of 4. They are just as bad at maintaining the new one, so the water quality is basically the same. This is a bring your own water kind of gym. Do not pass out from dehydration here, you're not in good hands unless someone gifts you a bottle from their store.
The gym is dirty especially when overcrowded most evenings. There are spray bottles for the equipment everywhere but nothing provided to clean the equipment. With and only two small trash cans tucked away in corners, most people opt to just not clean the equipment despite all the "Bring your own towel" signs.
The Gold's Gym Challenge they tout each year isn't a competition for the hardworking individuals who want to flex their gains, its for those who can write the most emotionally compelling essay while also having decent results. They are giving out prizes for the best overall personal transformations, not the best physical transformations. Sorry, serious bodybuilders are not as welcome but that may be a plus for some.
The locker room is serviceable , though showers have rusty and clogged shower heads, floor is bad bring flip flops and socks.
There is what looks like mold in the sauna between the wood boards and where the glass connects to the floor
I'm sure i can speak for many when i say overall this gym is very good. It's run like an alien hive mind constantly looking to expand and grow its members but has never stopped to look at what it takes to reach that next tier of quality.
But hey... they have more equipment than all of the other gyms in the area, the people staff are friendly and they have a genuinely pleasant vibe in all their free classes.
No one or no business is...
Read moreIt gives me great pleasure to write about my positive experience I have had with Newburgh, NY Golds thus far. Coming from other different gyms, Golds by far is the best investment I have made in myself. There are several different programs (classes, free weights, one on one personal training, pool, basketball court, etc.) that I personal have took full advantage of. One program that I would recommend to anyone are the one on one personal training.
The personal training at Golds is not like other gyms. EVERYTHING is explained to you. For example: why your knees may hurt from something you are doing incorrectly elsewhere; how your diet will effect your workouts; why it is crucial to your health to eat certain things to allow your body to work to its full potential. Honestly, if you have not looked into the personal training, you have not set yourself up for success.
The personal trainer that I worked with was Chris Lambros. He is damn good at what he does. Chris has shown me functional training and machines to allow me to get closer to obtaining my fitness goals. Chris's expertise surpasses most. Chris will explain every science behind each move he instructs you to do, and how your body works with what you are eating. Chris is a NCSF personal training and NCSF sport nutrition specialist. Chris is VERY professional and is VERY attentive to the health and fitness of his clients. It is obvious he loves what he does. Chris may have a plan prior to you seeing him, but he adjusts to what the client is able to achieve. Chris is honest and without you realizing, he will recognize you have have a lack of motivation and he will push you through it.
I would recommend Chris to anyone. When I do recommend Chris, I pre-warn them that they will WORK. :) Chris has pushed my limits and has allowed to be become a much healthier and happier person. My husband has worked with Chris too. He would agree on everything I have said.
Thank you Chris for helping me become a more centered, healthier, happier, fit person. You should be rewarded for the job you do. Not many people are in jobs where they have the ability to personally affect someones life in such a huge aspect. You should be commended.
Everyone should work with Chris! ...
Read moreI don't care for this gym and only use it when I am home for the summer. I go here because Planet Fitness is awful and Sportsplex is too expensive. I mostly use this gym for leg exercises as I can do just about everything else is home. My problem is I don't own a squat rack, but that's what gyms are for. However, no matter what time of day I go, every squat rack is always taken. There are only four free standing ones available. Two are of great quality, the other two less so. The last three times I have gone I have not been able to use any of them. There are too few for the amount of volume the gym has. The gym should reconsider some of the other machines available - specifically the upperbody section of plate machines that literally no one uses. The gym should also make a greater push to get their members to wipe down machines after use and provide more stations with cleaner since they are too cheap to just have a bunch of bottles and towels that people can move around with them. In my most recent visit, this idiot trainer (not an employee) and his two female clients decided to set themselves up for dumbell/platform exercises in the corner of the leg machine area that has cleaner, trashcans and foamrollers. They were literally blocking everything and got mad when anyone tried to get through to get a foamroller or cleaner, myself included. The "trainer" (not an employee) said something to me on my last walkthrough about how I could use the cleaner on the other side of the gym in a very snarky, toxic manner. I was baffled, and should have told him that he should have set up shop in the vast, open turf area where they should have been in the first place. Not wanting to cause a scene, however, I just walked away. Most of the customers at Gold's are genuine people, but it is a shame that commercial gyms continue to tolerate such toxic behavior seeing as no employee ever told these people to move. I won't...
