Summary of my experience: • I told them up front what I thought the issue was, and it was the last thing they checked. • Charged an extra $80 for an “Advanced Benching Fee” they did not tell me about until I went to pick up my PC. • PC case was not completely closed when I got it back because they jammed wires in the side and tried to force it shut. • One of my internal SSDs was not even plugged in. • Lack of variety in hardware available in store.
Full story: I went in to Computer Wholesale Supply on 61st St in Tulsa on a Sunday. I explained to them I had narrowed down the issue I was having to either my CPU overheating or my PSU going out. They said it likely wasn’t my CPU because it wasn’t getting hot enough based on the temperatures I told them. When I asked about power supplies, they explained I could have them diagnose the issue for $45, and that would go toward the cost of my repair. I decided to give them a shot. That was my mistake.
Four business days later (Thursday, an acceptable amount of time), I get a call from the repairman stating he identified the issue (the power supply), and asked if I would like him to put a new power supply in. I asked about what they had in stock, and several questions (wattage, rating, modular or not). His response was “If you are so worried about it, maybe you should just come in.” Sounded like a plan, so I went in. They did not have a modular PSU that wasn’t outside my price range, so I took the next best thing so I could use the $45 toward a PSU. It took about 15 minutes for them to install.
In the meantime, I had to pay for the repair. This is when I found out they charged an extra $80 for an “Advanced Benching Fee.” I asked why, and they stated because it took so long to find the issue. I told them my recommendation of what the issue was up front, but apparently that advice was not taken seriously. The grand total after they took off the initial $45 was about $170 for an $80 power supply.
Unfortunately, the fun didn’t stop there. I get the PC home, and I noticed the case wasn’t completely on the PC. I should have checked it out more thoroughly in the store, but I thought something as simple as putting a case on wouldn’t have been an issue. The case was still partially open, enough to fit a penny through the opening. I opened the case to see why, and I found it was because they jammed all the wires from the (non-modular) power supply that weren’t in use on the back side of the motherboard mount. This is where wires are supposed to go, but not jammed in so tightly it makes the case bulge out. I resolved this issue myself with some basic wire management.
I booted up my PC, and lo and behold, another issue. One of my SSDs was not even plugged in. They could have turned on the PC and tested it, but they clearly didn’t. Oh well, simple enough to resolve myself.
In summary, if you are even moderately capable of dealing with computer hardware, you are better off going with your initial thought instead of letting Computer Wholesale Supply handle your repair. They got it done in a fair amount of time, but they missed some basic stuff and overcharged without explaining there would be an...
Read moreI took a computer in for their wipe and re-install service. I had called before going, and spoke to a very polite female. She detailed two levels of wipe/re-install at different prices. She thought the lesser price might work. She ALSO chatted with me about questions I had, offered me a mini course -for FREE as a COURTESY - for how to do something I knew how to do (as I claimed I did not know how to do it) and she told me how to do it CORRECTLY. AND she was polite. AND extremely helpful. "Thank you Ma'am!"
I took it in, and was charged the higher price. But the higher price was STILL a good deal.(They might want to review the pricing standards with the different staff members) I was promptly spoken to as soon as I was done looking at something and approached an available worker with my PC. I was given a solid price quote, given easy to understand paperwork and a date for pick up, was not harassed by sales staff while I browsed after drop off and was politely given information about products when I asked on the way out.
I received a 'ready to be picked up' call one full day and an evening before the pick up date I was quoted. When I arrived, I was not harassed by pushy sales, but was definitely given recognition as an arriving customer. Personal taste I suppose with sales staff habits jumping at people who walk in or allowing for customer freedom, and their approach was well with in the range I appreciate as a customer. It was also busy that day. I did not feel ignored. But then again, I do not feel as if my arrival any where requires Baroque powdered wigged footsmen trumpeting my arrival and swooping in with Turkish delight. So. What ever.
My computer was promptly retrieved on look up at the check in desk. And lo and behold, I did not HAVE to ask why I was given the higher price quote. Why? Well, it was taped RIGHT THERE on the desk in plain sight. Where I had placed my PC on the sign the first day. So. What ever. Still a fair price for the service. They carried my PC to the check out desk, ran a tidy check out, helped me double check I had my receipt, and offered to carry my PC out for me. And they did!
Before leaving, I asked a few questions about something else. The counter fellow was unsure and before he could finish saying he would find someone to answer, someone showed up to chat with me about it. I also asked a few questions in there I knew the answers to, got the right answers. For FREE. As a courtesy and very professional customer awareness /education offering. When they COULD have made a sale suggestion to take advantage of a customer and pad their tech sales.
I got the worked on puter home, hooked it up, and it would appear they did precisely what they were paid to do. It runs like a sparklie happy rainbow ponie doing an apple pie dance.
So far. So good. I will...
Read moreI went in looking for a few different things one was possibly a 24-pin psu, all they had second hand was Old Dell psu's that they were selling for $50 that's ridiculous. They also did not have a very typical adapter for building computers additionally I heard them telling a woman who was looking to buy a gaming laptop incorrect information to try to get her to buy the more expensive laptop. this is my first experience in their store and it will be my last. I don't know that I'd advise people to shop there unless there's absolutely nowhere else to get a new power supply if you absolutely have to have it same day but aside from that specific instance or the ram that sell they have their 120 mm fans are all priced at $15.99 (you can get a 5 pack of artic fans for 25 online) everything in there was very high price over typical retail.......
7/14/23 update. The sellers response: "Under no circumstance will we provide false or misleading information to make a sale we provide the most accurate information possible" except for when I heard their associate lying to a senior cx about what she needed for what she was trying to do with a PC. I'm not here for popularity and will always review the actual experience in store, if they don't want bad reviews they shouldnt give bad service and shouldnt overcharge. Amazon is an example, anywhere you look online their prices are easily beatable, other brick and mortar box stores also offer better pricing. At least 2 of their potential cx's found my review helpful...and that's why I post reviews, so others can avoid bad service. I may have asked about flexible pricing had I been spoken to or offered assistance in any way...but definitely not after hearing their associate lie to a senior citizen to make a sale. If they're so concerned about their local reputation they should run an honest business. Not price gouging...
