A great learning environment for old world crafts! Caleb is a master smith and fantastic instructor. He brings a contextual understanding of blacksmithing to understand not only how to work metal, but the why it works in layman's terms. The Blacksmithing I & II classes are a solid introduction to basic metal working. Additional classes are available and scheduling is done on line.
In these classes you will learn lighting and managing a coal forge, the types of coal used in blacksmithing, planning your project, heating your steel, cutting and moving metal, cold riveting, forge welding, hardening and tempering steel tools. Your projects will consist of making a coat rack, a set of fireplace tools with hanging rack, and a hardened chisel for use in future projects. You’ll become familiar with the basic coal forge, blacksmith anvil, drill press, and belt grinder.
The forge is enclosed but well ventilated, so it is chilly on cold mornings but warms quickly with the forges lit. In the summer the temperature is high enough that the class schedules are shifted away from the uncomfortable levels of heat. Bring a water bottle regardless as you will work up a sweat! There is ample parking next to the forge on the west side of the building but arriving early is encouraged to allow maximum time in the forge.
