In November of 2023 I walked into Wotown.Fit not knowing anything about CrossFit. But I knew it had to be better than what I had been doing, which was: get a gym membership, go for two weeks, get bored, stay home, cancel membership, stay unhealthy.
It was intimidating at first seeing terms like toes-to-bar, double unders, wall walk, etc. on the screen every day. But I figured out what they were pretty quickly. It was intimidating watching people actually do these movements as I thought, “well I’m happy for them; I’m just here to get in shape. I doubt I’ll ever get to that level.”
15 months have passed and there’s still a long way to go, but I can say that I have done more than I ever thought I could. The key is just keep showing up. When you’re sore, you didn’t sleep well, you didn’t eat right the night before - you just go anyway. Building the habit of exercise is the most important part of getting healthy. Tiny victories over time=big results.
At Wotown Tres and the coaches do a great job meeting you on your fitness level and then pushing you slowly over time to the next level. Always encouraging and always welcoming.
But the best part of Wotown is the members. Having a community to work out with, doing variations on the same movements, trying to cross that finish together makes all the difference when you’re deciding whether to stay in bed or get out and go do something hard. It is hard. Some days it’s downright awful. Some days you end a workout laying on the floor gasping with your heart rate sky high and questioning why you’re paying for this. But hard things are always better together with friends.
I’m in better shape now in my 40’s than ever before. It’s more than just “losing weight” (which I did). Or getting stronger (which I also did). Functional fitness, the combination of strength, skills, and endurance means I can do more and feel better living life outside the gym, and Lord willing, live longer. Go...
Read moreI had hoped for a more positive experience at this gym, but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. While the facility presents itself as a welcoming, family-oriented environment, my experience suggested otherwise.
One of the gym owners openly mocked my personal scores behind my back, only offering an apology months later after I confronted the situation through their spouse. This lack of professionalism extended to other areas, where concerns were not addressed with the integrity and accountability one would expect in a community-focused gym.
Additionally, the management demonstrated a troubling disregard for maintaining a respectful and safe environment. Despite serious concerns about inappropriate behavior from certain members, the owners chose not to take action. Such issues create an uncomfortable and unprofessional atmosphere that should not be tolerated in any fitness community.
Overall, my experience was disappointing, and I believe the gym’s leadership should take greater responsibility in fostering an environment that truly aligns with the values they promote to the community. Addressing these concerns with transparency and accountability would be a crucial step toward creating a safer and more respectful space for all members.
Update: While the owner asserts that the claim of mocking scores was a misunderstanding, it is difficult to see how that could be the case. Screenshots were taken of scores, which were then shared with other members in a mocking manner, accompanied by laughing and joking, as well as inappropriate emojis. This behavior raises concerns about professionalism and respect within the gym...
Read moreAfter working out from home for a few years I was looking to rejoin a local gym. I had met the owner, Tres, at a local coffee shop a little while prior. He was wearing a WOTOWN shirt so we started talking about it. I joined shortly after that conversation, but the timing wasn’t right with my season of life and schedule. Fast forward a few years and the crew welcomed me with open arms when I reached out about rejoining. I’ve been back for about 6 months and it’s been fantastic. To be honest I had reservations because my for CrossFit gym (back in the early 2010s) was so unique and felt like home. I had high expectations, and WOTOWN has not let me down! My two oldest kids are now involved, participating in WOTOWN kids. If you’re on the fence - send the email, send the text, message them on FB, whatever your preferred communication method and get started! There are workout options...
