The guy that runs a place and I believe her name is Ashley, which she's an employee there, are really amazing people and sometimes I will choose, which I'm sure you do as well, not only the best food around but if if somewhere had the best food around but yet they were rude or off-putting or just seemed not so good, I can assure you that you probably wouldn't go back, whether the food was good or not. Sometimes the food don't have to be nothing to write home about, but the people are so great that you look for an excuse to go there.
Me saying that isn't implying their food isn't great but I am trying to show you that no matter how good something is on the outside if the people on the inside aren't as good what you don't want that kind of experience. This is family run, the people inside of it whether they're blood or not, or just so close and you can tell and the feeling of it inside is just down home, family run and family operated and the people inside are just that good. Y'all come by and check out my friends that I may just the other day on an accidental phone call and wound up going. One of the greatest phone calls that I never knew I needed to make.
And the owner you can tell really looks out for his employees because when I said I was on my way I could hear him in the background well what if he robs us all, which although it's not a good feeling to hear, he don't know me from the mask robber down the road so that's what he should have said and he's not down putting me he's just making his employees the priority.
It's like I told Ms Ashley when I heard it, if I give you 10 snakes and tell you that they're great but the problem is is one of these out of the 10 is going to bite you on purpose and when they do you'll die. Well since you don't know which one of the 10 it is that's going to be biting you it's in your best interest to tell all 10 I'm sorry you can't come in. That's not downputting the nine that's protecting you against the one. So he said what he should have said and unfortunately he was right, not with me of course but it is what you got to do. Thanks again to the White House because this place is really really magnificent. What a great great experience I had with great great people. It was a wonderful experience and I'll be by there soon again I...
Read more5 stars — because I have never fought so hard for peace in my mouth
I’ve eaten a lot of country cooking in my day—been baptized in gravy, raised on cornbread, and emotionally restructured by a good biscuit. But White House Restaurant in Alabama? That’s not just food. That’s a war for your soul, and I went in unarmed.
The moment I walked in, I knew I was entering a battlefield. Lace curtains. Booths built like pews. Someone’s meemaw was in the corner shelling peas like she was counting down to judgment day.
I ordered the chicken fried steak, and when it hit the table, the air got thick. A man three tables down started saluting. A baby cried. My fork bent under the weight of divine flavor. First bite in and my ancestors showed up like: “We fought a war for this. The good war. The one with mashed potatoes.”
The collard greens? Braised in what I can only assume was the tears of Union and Confederate soldiers reconciling over hot sauce. Mac and cheese so rich I had to file a joint tax return with it. Gravy that could end generational trauma if poured directly on the heart.
At one point, an elderly man wearing suspenders looked up from his meatloaf, locked eyes with me, and said, “Son, flavor like this doesn’t come without casualties.” Then he passed out in slow motion and whispered, “Tell Linda I forgive her.” I still don’t know who Linda is, but I hope she’s doing okay.
By dessert (banana pudding with a Nilla wafer crown), I was humming Dixie and clutching the table like it was a musket. It wasn’t food anymore—it was a reckoning. The staff served each plate like a ceasefire agreement between hunger and satisfaction.
Would I go back? You don’t “go back” to White House. You return to the battlefield, eyes open, fork ready, prayer...
Read moreAt first i thought it was weird that you had to go through a line to get your. food, but this Cafeteria-style Restaraunt has some pretty darn good food!! They offer different main courses & sides each day to get Vegetable Plates or Meat, Meat + 1, Meat + 2, etc. They also offer salads & desserts. You don't have to get the Daily Foods offered through the line. They have a Menu to order from, as well. Theyre open 7 days a week, have wonderful waitresses & staff, and you can place an Order over the Phone & it'll be ready when you get there. While there, you've got to try the Peach Cobbler & check out the pictures of this Country's Presidents & painted murals on the walls!! This Lil Gem is a must to visit and eat!! My hubby & I even took family there & they loved the Ham on Sundays & the huge burgers with fies that are found on the Menu. Sorry, but i don't have any pics to...
