My wife & I needed a getaway with our two German shepherds & Calamigos Ranch turned out to be the perfect spot! A truly stunning location of incomparable natural beauty, it is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. With its incredibly beautifully kept grounds with rolling hills, lush gardens, hiking trails, a state of the art gym with everything you could ask for, lakes & bubbling creeks, we would walk our dogs for an hour every morning around the property & on the nearby hiking trails & it was so lovely & relaxing. So peaceful, so private & at the same time, so luxurious.
From the moment we drove up, we were treated like royalty. And by we, I mean all 4 of us, including our puppies! They even got their own gift bag, filled with all kinds of treats, dog bandanas & food & water bowls & every time we went for a hike, the valet asked us if we wanted water. When we first arrived, we were greeted with champagne & Hobie walked us through the resort & gave the puppies their swag bag. They even gave us a complimentary upgrade to a different room with a firepit & fenced-in backyard at no additional charge! When we got to the room, we were surprised to find a complimentary bottle of their wine (which was amazing!) & a customized candle. The room was great, clean, very private & quiet. Every night my wife & I sat would unwind around the firepit with our puppies.
Cannot say enough about the staff. They were all amazing. Polite, welcoming, beyond helpful, going above & beyond at every turn. Whether it was the valet, with Spencer, Jackson & the rest of the team, the Ranch Club restaurant with Berto, Charlie, Jeri & the rest of them, the bar at the Spa with Christian, the service was surprisingly exceptional. Truly unprecedented. Super knowledgeable, super kind & super accommodating. Anything we needed, they were there in a heartbeat. As a whiskey & wine enthusiast, Berto stood out to us as particularly knowledgeable & informative on their offerings, from the food to the whiskeys they have that are specially made for them to their wines. It was great meeting him & talking with him at the Ranch Club bar and restaurant.
Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we went down to the Beach Club which took our breath away. Hunter was with us, assisting us, making himself available for anything we, or our puppies, needed & anticipated our every whim.
I went to college in Malibu & lived there for 10 years before my wife & I moved to LA, where we worked in the entertainment industry for 20 years. Now in Vegas for 4 years, we need a getaway from the hustle & bustle (& the heat!) & with Calamigos Ranch only 3.5 hours away & so pet friendly, we donāt need to look anywhere else when we want to escape. Itās everything Malibu should be & so much more! Have already recommended it to all our friends.
This is the place where you rediscover nature, peace, and a stress free way of living. Calamigos Ranch is heaven on earth. Canāt thank everyone there for making our stay so memorable & so special. Thank you all & looking forward to seeing you all again (&...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCalamigos is definitely set up to cater nicely to events and large groups. If you're a couple or a family looking for a high end hotel for vacation outside of the large group/event setting, go somewhere else like the Montage. What they do well for events--And what you'd overlook for events (like mediocre food, attention to detail, etc.)--just doesn't work for me for the prices you pay to stay here.
Room service - did not show up until we called and both nights didn't have the room cleaned until we were getting ready for dinner after several calls. They have text messaging set up so they'll send a message in the morning to ask if you're ready for house keeping, and then just never show up to service the room.
Their on premise restaurant (not Malibu cafe) is mediocre at best. Their pasta was the worst I've ever had, caking together, just overall unpleasant. They say they don't have microwaves, but something wasn't right. They either rewarmed it in bulk or were using starchy overused pasta water to boil the noodles. The service staff were very nice and friendly though.
I had an 80 minute massage booked, that I unfortunately walked out of about 25 minutes in. Something I've never done, and was embarrassed to do, quite frankly--the thought of another 55 minutes on that table was unbearable. The male therapist (I've had many male therapist in the past) had zero feeling for the human anatomy. It wasn't a matter of pressure, but technique was totally absent and painful or completely void of anything more than just oil being rubbed on my body. Frankly I was really embarrassed to walk out of there, I felt bad. But he was so bad, it was impossible to get myself to stay. The management was great and I even offered to still pay for my service but they comped it. For 310 dollars at a luxury resort, please vet your therapists for experience.
The property itself is stunning. The pools are great and even in the fall months, their main pool was heated. Def a bonus.
Staff generally are wonderful and nice--however they have a largely young workforce. So in areas where you'd expect assertion and knowledge, you often got wishy washy answers.
We stayed in the estate rooms, beautiful end of the property. With the events, it gets super loud really late-- so if you're not staying to be part of the event, I would reconsider your choice with this hotel. One pet peeve is the coffee machine which is set to either espresso or full coffee sizes. When you brew an espresso, it overflows the espresso cup and makes a massive mess. I'd recommend they make sure to dial back the size of the pour to the actual size of the cups in the room.
Very impressive lobby and warm wood burning fireplace
I love Malibu cafe and the grounds surrounding it. Great space.
Overall, I would Never stay here again and for $1200 + /night room rate, there has to be more attention to detail that is simply lacking In every way possible.
Bottom line- find another hotel unless you're part of an event being hosted here or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI want to thank the staff of Calamigos for their EXTRAORDINARY service in helping us plan and host an event for our veteran group. Thanks to a generous donor, nearly 100 veterans were able to meet at the gorgeous Oak Room and enjoy an afternoon of camraderie and friendship.
I'm going to add a lot of detail here to express my sincere thanks AND so anyone reading this will know they are in great hands if they book an event or room here.
The setting of the Oak Room itself with the waterfalls, outdoor areas surrounded by trees, etc. were simply stunning. The appetizers, cheese diplays, and others foods were delicious.
I want to give our heartfelt thanks to some of the staff members: the gracious events managger, Kyung, for helping us organize the event and for making a few changes last minute to accommodate some of our older vets. Jenna, the event captain, who kept everything running smoothly and with such good cheer.
I also want to thank the bartenders and especillay Makena for inventing the "Makena Peach" on the spot that became the drink in demand for the evening! (Peach tequila, peach pucker, jalapeƱo, mint and tequila with soda witer and lime juice -- fantastic! -- thank you, Makena!).
The Oak Room ambience was so breathtaking it adds to the good feelings of just being together in such a gorgeous location. I can't emphasize enough just how beautiful Calamigos is...We laughed and danced so much that day, I decided to book a room and stay overnight -- and I am so glad I did!! The bungalo was SPECTACULAR! I wanted to move in there forever. Great amount of space and great decor - a perfect blend of indoor and outdoor. And the grounds are stunning.
I'm definitly staying here again.
A very special thanks for Ryan and Kayla in Reservations for going the extra mile for us. Also, to Michael, the Front Desk Manager, for his friendliness and humor.
What an absolutely, terrific team in a spectacular location.
For those asking, Calamigos accommodates dogs and that is a very, very wonderful thing for us veterans. I just have to thank Steve (forgive me as I think that is his name, if someone at Calamigos lets me know I will update this review) for helping me wrangling my dogs...and also printing some name tags at the business office.
I love, love, love...
