I was visiting family from out of state and decided to get rentals from this establishment. The price was pretty good, but the boards weee really chewed up and the ankle leash snapped as I was swimming out to my first wave of the day. I chatted with others on the beach and was assured that the surf shops in the area are really good and take care of their own. Various people said that they believe I would receive a full refund for my board rental.
After returning the board to The Surf Shop, I was told to speak to Big Al. He said that I should have come back for a new leash and that they have no reason to give me a refund... He said that I should have read the rental agreement.
Only after I stated that I would be writing review and requested a copy of the rental agreement, did he offer a tee shirt or hat as compensation. (He never gave me a copy of the rental agreement)
Ironically, I was surfing with some friends too, and one of them had nearly the same issue that I had. She had rented her equipment from a different establishment, it may have been a little more expensive, but the staff offered a full refund immediately after seeing the issue.
So, in short you get what you pay for: worn equipment and poor...
Read moreThis is THE Surf Shop in Westport. They've been a community staple since my dad and his friends surfed out here in the 80's-90's. Everyone in here is helpful and kind and genuinely loves surfing and the Westport surf community; I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else if I needed something surf related. Pretty sure it's still ran by the same owner as when my dad used to come here too--he always talks about stopping by to see 'the old man' whenever he's in town. They actually still have some art hanging on the wall in the shop that my aunt drew sometime in the 90's too. Pictured is my dad in front of the old surf shop sign sometime in the 90's, as well as him and his friends surfing with gear they almost definitely purchased entirely from the surf shop or someone they met there, in addition to some recent pics of the shop from my last visit. This is one of those places where you can really feel that surfing is a way of life, not just a hobby. Long live...
Read moreI had a great experience at this shop and will return everytime I come to Westport. My friend and I were beginners who had never surfed before. Not only were they completely nonjudgmental (important to me, as there is nothing worse that renting any kind of sporting gear as a newbie and being judged), the staff/owners took time of our their day to lead us down to the jetty first, for us to check out the conditions before considering renting to us (they were more concerned about our safety first rather than just making money). Corey took several minutes giving us first timers tips and essentially a mini lesson in-shop. The gear is incredibly affordable ($15/suit, board $5 boots, gloves for full business day) . The gear is a little worn but works just fine. The staff knew we were looking for a campsite in town and even called around local campsites while we were gone. Very considerate, friendly, down to earth people and great little shop,...
