My 89-year old mother is a Meals-on-Wheels recipient. It is a fantastic service. I work during the day, and can't have her operating the stove to fix herself a meal. And it's great to have an extra set of eyes on her during the day, as well, as she has dementia. This has been a lifesaver. She's having a medical issue, and I called to see how it could be handled, in the event that I have to take her to the doctor on tomorrow. I didn't want it to count against her, with the "3 strikes, and you're out" of the program. Wesley informed me that the meal for tomorrow had already been ordered. The meal can be left with a neighbor (not possible) or left with someone else in the home (there is no one else in the home). If these options are not doable, her absence would count against her, as the meal has to be canceled by 11am the day before. That is absolutely ridiculous! I notified them as soon as I could of the possibility of her needing to have a doctor appointment, and I was met with total inflexibility. I liken this to elderly adults who have to decide - do I pay my rent this month, or do I buy medicine. In her case, do I go to the doctor, or do I wait for the MOW volunteer to show up - ANYTIME between 10 and 1.This is extremely unfortunate from an organization that is supposed to provide...

A few years ago they used to bring dinner to my parents that were frozen and my dad lost 20 lb in a period of a few months because he would nibble on them. My mom threw most of it out and we finally had to stop them from coming. The warm meals are totally different but they don't serve them in our area unfortunately but they have great...
