My 89-year old mother is a Meals-on-Wheels recipient. It is a fantastic service. I work during the day, and can't have her operating the stove to fix herself a meal. And it's great to have an extra set of eyes on her during the day, as well, as she has dementia. This has been a lifesaver. She's having a medical issue, and I called to see how it could be handled, in the event that I have to take her to the doctor on tomorrow. I didn't want it to count against her, with the "3 strikes, and you're out" of the program. Wesley informed me that the meal for tomorrow had already been ordered. The meal can be left with a neighbor (not possible) or left with someone else in the home (there is no one else in the home). If these options are not doable, her absence would count against her, as the meal has to be canceled by 11am the day before. That is absolutely ridiculous! These are elderly adults who, unfortunately, get sick unexpectedly - as we all do. To have such a stringent, obstinate policy is crazy,. I notified them as soon as I could of the possibility of her needing to have a doctor appointment, and I was met with total inflexibility. This is akin to elderly adults who have to decide - do I pay my rent this month, or do I buy medicine. In her case, do I go to the doctor, or do I wait for the MOW volunteer to show up - ANYTIME between 10 and 1.This is extremely unfortunate from an organization that is supposed to provide...

You can also sign up to visit and elder once a week for two hours. And there are probably other ways you...
