๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ California Highway 1: Monterey โ†’ San Luis Obispo

1๏ธโƒฃ Monterey โ†’ Carmel ๐ŸŸ Monterey Bay Aquarium: Been wanting to visit after seeing it on Bilibili! The Kelp Forest right at the entrance is breathtaking ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒŠ, and the Open Sea exhibit with swirling sardine schools is iconic. The sea otter exhibit was also super popular โ€” four lively little cuties! ๐Ÿฆฆ The aquarium connects to an outdoor ocean-view deck with telescopes for spotting wild otters and seals. Turns out, Montereyโ€™s otters hang out here! While the $60 ticket felt a bit pricey, I could easily spend a whole day here! ๐Ÿ“ 17-Mile Drive: The weather was cloudy โ˜๏ธ, so the views werenโ€™t as stunning as on sunny days. We entered from the Pacific Grove Gate ($12 per car, includes map ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ) and drove from stop 3 to 15 (out of 17), exiting through the Carmel Gate. The most famous spot is Stop 12 โ€” the Lone Cypress ๐ŸŒฒ (though itโ€™s propped up with steel beams, giving major โ€œHuangshan greeting pineโ€ vibes). ๐Ÿ“ Carmel-by-the-Sea: Just a short drive from 17-Mile Drive. The town is small โ€” you can walk the main street in about 10 minutes. We didnโ€™t stay long due to the weather, but I spotted a gorgeous flower-covered hotel โ€” would be lovely to stay here someday! ๐Ÿ’ โค๏ธ Back in Monterey, we lucked out โ€” a Tuesday market was set up right outside our hotel! Fun snacks and vibes ๐ŸŽช๐Ÿก. Also highly recommend Coast Guard Pier for close-up views of sea lions ๐Ÿฆญ, and if you look closely, you might spot otters in the kelp! ๐Ÿจ Portola Hotel & Spa: $25/day parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ. Great location near Fishermanโ€™s Wharf with lots of dining options. Note: If you have mobility issues, request a room close to the elevator โ€” some are reaaally far! 2๏ธโƒฃ Monterey โ†’ San Luis Obispo ๐Ÿ“ Soberanes Point: Even under cloudy skies, it was beautiful ๐ŸŒŠโ›ฐ๏ธ โ€” ocean on one side, mountains on the other. Trails on both sides of the road; Whale Peak Trail offers a nice short climb with great views. ๐Ÿ“ Bixby Bridge: A famous photo spot! The deep cliffs are impressive up close ๐Ÿ˜. Unfortunately, it was crowded with large families โ€” had to wait awhile for a clear shot. ๐Ÿ“ Elephant Seal Vista Point: Since part of Highway 1 was closed, we detoured back to Monterey and took Highway 101 here. Youโ€™ll know youโ€™re close once you smell them ๐Ÿ˜…โ€ฆ The beach was covered in elephant seals! It was molting season, so most were fast asleep ๐Ÿ’ค. ๐Ÿ“ San Luis Obispo: A peaceful mountain-backed town โ€” the fog rolling in made it feel extra serene โ˜๏ธ๐Ÿƒ. Probably lots of good hiking trails around here. ๐Ÿจ Apple Farm Inn: Highly recommend! Lovely vintage decor ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿก (skip if rustic isnโ€™t your style). The lobby offers tea, coffee, and timed cider tastings โ˜•๐ŸŽ. We booked a Deluxe King Room with pool access โ€” so relaxing! #USTravel #California #Highway1 #RoadTrip #TravelGuide
