According to new Google Maps data, Starved Rock State Park is the fourth visited state park in the entire U.S., and it’s located less than two hours from Chicago. This recent ranking is based on direction requests made on the platform since Memorial Day 2025. It’s no wonder Starved Rock State Park topped the list—it’s renowned for its stunning sandstone cliffs, plunging canyons, picturesque waterfalls, and scenic hiking trails. At Starved Rock, there is a little something for everyone. Starved Rock State Park hiking trails ----------------------------------------- There are suggested trail routes that cater to different skill levels , ranging from a 30-minute, 0.6-mile round-trip “easy” hike with a scenic river view to a 4-mile “moderate to difficult” trek leading to waterfalls at French, Wildcat, and La Salle canyons. For those seeking flatter paths, the Illinois, Ottawa, and Kaskaskia Canyon s at the eastern end of the park are relatively flat. However, be prepared to get wet if you plan to hike all the way to the waterfall at the back of Illinois Canyon. If you’re interested in longer hikes, you can start from the visitor center to access trails that stretch between Illinois Canyon and the lodge. Alternatively, you can park at one of the lots along the main road and hike in from there. Wildcat Canyon is the deepest and broadest canyon in the park , offering spectacular views. Regardless of the path you choose, Starved Rock will undoubtedly impress. According to the park’s website, the trails at Starved Rock State Park are open from 7 a.m. to sunset, while the campground gates are open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Camping fees vary, typically ranging from $25 to $35 per night.
