A 3-Day Spring Outing Guide to Oklahoma from Dallas
The main attractions in Oklahoma are concentrated in three major areas: 📍 1. Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge This is a large wildlife refuge featuring stunning natural scenery, with mountains, lakes, and a dam. Here, you can go hiking, enjoy views of mountains, waters, birds, bison, and the dam, or drive up the mountain for a panoramic overlook.😊🌿🚗 ❣️ The visitor center houses a museum that’s really fun to explore! ❣️ There are over a dozen hiking trails of varying difficulties (long and short). Most are very easy, except for Elk Mountain Trail, which is rated "difficult" — it has lots of rocks, no clear trail markers (easy to get lost), and limited parking (you can’t enter once it’s full). Pick up trail information at the visitor center. ❣️ The Holy City is related to Christianity. If you don’t have a religious belief, it’s just a spot for a quick photo op.😊🌿🚗 For accommodation, stay in Lawton. Before your trip, mark the spots you want to visit on Google Maps to avoid detours. 📍 2. Oklahoma City It’s a large city where you can visit museums, see landmarks, and explore the University of Oklahoma. ❣️ Light House: There’s a big lake next to the lighthouse — you can walk or cycle along the lakeshore. ❣️ Fun Forest: Great for hiking; it also has a playground and binoculars for birdwatching. ❣️ National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum: Dedicated to cowboy culture. ❣️ Wheeler Ferris Wheel at Wheeler District: A local landmark, but the ferris wheel is currently not in operation. ❣️ University of Oklahoma: Home to a beautiful library.😊🌿🚗 📍 3. Near Turner Falls Park The park has waterfalls, and not far away is Arbuckle Wilderness (a zoo where you can drive through and feed the animals). Note: We didn’t get to visit this area — my oldest kid suddenly felt unwell with a sore throat and a slight fever, so we headed straight back home. If you’re traveling with kids, always bring a thermometer, fever-reducing medicine, band-aids, and anti-allergy medicine — just in case of emergencies (I pack these every time). Tips ❣️ Oklahoma is still quite cold during spring break — bring a down jacket! For hiking, dress in layers so you can easily remove clothes (it’s cold in the morning and evening, but warms up at noon). We even saw leftover snow by the walls at The Holy City! ❣️ There are almost no gas stations in the wildlife refuge — fill up your tank before going. There are also few places to eat, so bring snacks if you plan to stay out for a long time. #GoWanderInSpring #SpringOuting #Dallas #Oklahoma
