Chez Joel Bistro Francais in Chicago

My beloved hidden gem of a French bistro! I’m not usually into super fancy or formal French fine dining — too heavy and salty for me — but this cozy, family-style spot is my favorite French restaurant in Chicago. Is it mind-blowing? Not exactly. But when I crave comforting French flavors, it’s the first place that comes to mind. 🍲 Daily Special Soup – Always finished with a drizzle of black truffle oil — such a lovely touch! Smooth, flavorful, and perfect to start the meal. 🐌 Baked Escargot – Delicious and garlicky. 🧀 Warm Brie – Creamy and comforting. 🐸 Frog Legs – A must-order for me! Crispy outside, tender inside — totally different from Chinese-style prep. 🍤 Seafood Soup & Fish Dishes – Not overly fancy, just honest, homestyle cooking that really satisfies. 🙅‍♀️ What didn’t work for me: 🧅 Onion Soup – Topped with a mountain of cheese — not my thing, though I often see others enjoying it. 🥩 Meat Dishes – A bit too mild for my taste, and not as strong as their seafood. But portions are huge and hearty — great for taking home and jazzing up yourself! 🍫 Dessert – Warm Chocolate & Puff As someone who doesn’t usually love chocolate desserts, this one won me over! A puff pastry filled with ice cream, drizzled with warm chocolate sauce — sweet but not overwhelming. Also tried their crème brûlée, sorbet, and ice cream — all solid, but the chocolate puff is the winner for me. 🌿 They also have a beautiful little outdoor patio — though I’m too bug-averse to enjoy it in summer 🐛. Maybe I’ll try it in the fall! #ChicagoEats #FrenchBistro #HiddenGem #ComfortFood #CozyVibes #ChicagoFoodie
