Chicago’s New Ukrainian Spot — Anelya 🇺🇦🍽️
This space was formerly Wherewithall, the sister restaurant to Michelin-starred Parachute. It closed last year, and now it’s been reborn as Anelya — a modern Ukrainian restaurant. 🥚 Egg Mayo – Deviled eggs with anchovy — salty, creamy, balanced. 🧀 Head Cheese + Pickles – Think Ukrainian-style meat jelly — savory with tangy pickles. 🥧 Trout Roe Tart + Cream Cheese + Wasabi – Crunchy, briny, spicy — a fun bite. 🐟 Herring + Onion – Might be fishy for some, but the onion cuts through — loved it. 🍲 Borscht with Duck – Rich beet soup with tender duck — add sour cream to taste. 🍖 Halushki – Beef short rib over potato dumplings (like gnocchi) — hearty and satisfying. 🥟 Varenyky – Potato-filled dumplings (pierogi-style) — carb-on-carb that actually works! 🍝 Lokshyna – Ukrainian “lasagna” — crispy, layered, savory. 🥔 Potato Pancakes with Cheese + Apple Sauce – Crispy outside, soft inside — sweet and savory. 🌭 Kovbasa + Sauerkraut – Classic sausage and kraut — solid but not standout. 🥬 Holubtsi – Cabbage rolls stuffed with wheat, carrots, black beans, in coconut milk — oddly dessert-like. Portions are small-plate style, so you can try many dishes. Everything I tasted was well-executed and flavorful — a great modern introduction to Ukrainian cuisine. 📍 Anelya 3472 N Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60618 #Anelya #UkrainianFood #ChicagoEats #ModernUkrainian #Avondale #SmallPlates #ComfortFood
