Chicago|South Loop Canteen
As a South Loop office worker, finding a good post-work meal is essential. UMAI is a solid Japanese spot in the area — moderate prices, wide menu, perfect for a casual drink and bite 🥃! 🥩 Beef Tongue ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A classic here — chewy with nice charcoal grill aroma. A must-order! Their other yakitori skewers are consistently good too. 🐙 Takoyaki ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Octopus balls with a softer exterior (could be crispier), but flavor is traditional — safe and satisfying for takoyaki fans! 🍤 Umai Crunchi Roll (Fried Shrimp Roll) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for those who prefer cooked sushi — slightly sweet sauce, and we asked for extra crunch for texture. 🌶️ Spicy Roasted Garlic Pork Ramen ⭐⭐ A rich, garlic-heavy broth (not very spicy). If you’re not into strong garlic flavor, maybe skip this one. 🍤 Tempura Udon ⭐⭐⭐ Tempura was crispy at first but softened in the broth. Udon noodles were decent — overall a mild, comforting dish. 🍣 Nama Sake Don (Salmon Bowl) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A must for sashimi lovers! Thick-cut, fresh salmon over rice — incredibly satisfying. I highly recommend this over rolls — the fish quality here is excellent! So worth it 😋🥹 Also worth trying: their classic curry tonkatsu and beef tataki! 📍 Address: 730 S Clark St, Chicago, IL 60605 #UChicago #StudentEats #ChicagoLife #JapaneseCuisine #WinterComfortFood #JapaneseFood
