Chicago | Picture-Perfect Lakeside Japanese Breakfast — Miru 🍱

I’ve written about dinner at Miru (inside The St. Regis) before, but this time I brought my parents to try their weekend brunch! Upon arrival, the host asked: indoor or outdoor? Since my parents really wanted the view, we chose the terrace. Luckily, it was a bit cloudy and not too sunny — perfect for al fresco dining with that stunning Lake Michigan backdrop. 🌤️⛱️ 🍱 Japanese Teishoku Set – Both my dad and I ordered the set, which came with miso soup, ginger rice, pickles, onsen egg with salmon roe, and a choice of protein. I went with salmon; my dad picked steak (which came with shishito peppers — he got a spicy one, lucky him! 🍀). Out of all the Japanese breakfast spots I’ve tried in Chicago, Miru’s proteins were cooked perfectly — juicy, flavorful, and tender. Even my dad couldn’t stop praising it! 🍣 Unagi Avocado Roll – Since my parents aren’t big on raw fish, this was the safest sushi choice. Honestly, though, the sushi here was just okay — the rice texture felt more suited for fried rice than sushi. 🍔 "Smash Burger" Mystery – We asked for the burger medium-rare, but the server said, “It’s a smash burger, so we can’t control the doneness.” We nodded… only to receive what looked like a regular thick patty burger — not smashed at all. 🤷‍♂️ Tasted fine, but not memorable. 🍄 Stone Pot Mushroom Fried Rice – A standout! Sizzling hot, filled with crispy mixed mushrooms, and served in a piping-hot stone pot. My mom (who loves vegetarian dishes) adored it. I thought it was a bit saucy, but maybe that’s from the mushrooms’ natural juices? Overall: ✅ Food is tasty, especially the teishoku and mushroom rice. ✅ Views are absolutely unbeatable. ⚠️ Prices are on the higher side for the quality — but you’re really paying for that million-dollar lakeside vista.
