Chicago Mexican Fusion — Unique Soft Shell Crab Taco 🌮
Mariscos San Pedro is a modern Mexican seafood spot with a clean, concise menu. From the ingredients and seasonings — Thai flavors, coconut, crispy moss — you can tell this isn’t your traditional Mexican restaurant. Located in Pilsen, the heart of Chicago’s Mexican community, right at Thalia Hall. Walked past it multiple times for concerts without noticing it. First visit, we followed Yelp & Google recs. Standouts: soft shell crab taco, plantain taco, and snapper ceviche. I liked them, even if they barely felt Mexican. 🦀 Soft Shell Crab (Thai Flavor) The crab is coated in squid ink — black, striking presentation. Thai-style seasoning + avocado sauce, topped with shredded papaya. (Honestly, seafood + Thai flavors never miss.) The crab was incredibly crispy, especially the parts with a bit of crab roe — so much texture. 🍌 Andrew’s Plantain Taco Purely plantain taco — first time trying, and I really liked it. Sweet,糯 plantain paired with a tangy sauce, topped with crispy coconut flakes. You can really tell the chef loves Thai food. 🐟 Snapper Ceviche The sauce was interesting — menu says coconut + leche de tigre. Leche de tigre is Peruvian — reminds me of Tanta’s citrusy raw fish dishes. This one wasn’t too sour; the fish seemed mixed with shrimp and apple (menu is super简洁, doesn’t say much). Overall okay, but still not as stunning or unique as Tzuco’s appetizers. 🔥 Wood Fried Camarones Four grilled shrimp. Liked the sauce, especially the avocado crema. But the shrimp tasted frozen — could’ve been better quality. 🍰 Desserts — tried lava cake + granizado (sorbet). Recommend the lava cake. Made with masa (corn-based), and the menu mentions mole in the— though I couldn’t really taste it. Still, it just tastes like chocolate cake. #ChicagoEats #MexicanFusion #SoftShellCrabTaco #PilsenEats #HiddenGem 🌮🦀
