Chicago Travel (44) – Iconic Downtown Breakfast Spot
Name: Lou Mitchell’s Location: 565 W Jackson Blvd, Chicago, IL 60661 Style: Classic American diner, breakfast-focused Hours: Wed–Fri: 6 AM – 2 PM | Sat–Sun: 7 AM – 2 PM This little eatery sits at the starting point of the famous Route 66 and has a rich history — opened in 1923 by an elderly man, later taken over by his son Lou Mitchell (hence the name).😁❤️ Tucked inside a larger building and a bit tricky to find, it has both an "indoor patio" and a regular dining area inside. The space is filled with vibrant colors.😘🙌 Like most diners, it specializes in traditional American breakfasts and sandwiches. Prices are genuinely low (lunch specials too!), portions are generous, and the food quality beats chain fast food — though it's not exactly "gourmet." They also have an impressively extensive menu — I’ve never seen a place with 22 types of omelettes! What we ordered: 🍞 Buttermilk Biscuits and Country Style Sausage Gravy – My mom loved it — hearty and filling. 🌯 Steak Burrito (forgot the exact name) – A bit disappointing. Advertised as steak but filled with ground beef, and skimpy on cheese. 🥛 Shared a glass of milk. Overall: Solid food, very affordable, quick service, and a prime downtown location near major sights. A convenient spot for a simple breakfast or lunch while exploring. Also a great place to experience traditional American diner culture! (Coming soon — another super popular diner: Little Goat!) #RestaurantRecommendation #HiddenGem #Chicago #ChicagoTravel #ChicagoEats #DinerCulture
