Robert et Fils — A Hidden French Gem in Chicago 🇫🇷✨
Robert et Fils sits in the former space of Elizabeth’s Asian fusion spot Kitsune, right on the same street as Cho Sun Ok. The entrance moved to the side, but inside it’s still cozy and intimate (a bit tight, but warm). Came with two friends, so we tried almost everything on the menu. The server said the concise menu allows for frequent changes — we’ll see 🤷🏻♀️. 🦆 Duck confit — crispy skin, tender meat, served with endive salad. Universal hit at the table. 🍞 Foie gras toast with caramelized onions — rich and savory-sweet. 🐟 Mackerel salad with pickled radish and olive oil — bright and balanced. 🥖 Sourdough bread — seriously chewy (not for the tender-toothed). 🐠 King Ora salmon with black lentils — nice fatty fish, though the lentil pairing felt off. 🥩 Steak frites with foie butter — unfortunately the letdown of the night. The foie butter made the steak taste overly gamey. Fries were great, though. 🍋 Citron tart — tangy and sweet, topped with dried lemon powder (not chocolate!). 🌻 Sunflower seed cake — nutty, fragrant, and satisfying.
