Rome | A Hidden Gem Amidst Thousands of Tourists
In the heart of Rome, nestled within the ruins of the Roman Forum (Foro Romano), stands a remarkable church: Basilica dei Santi Cosma e Damiano . Surprisingly, despite its proximity to the bustling Colosseum, this church remains largely unknown to the thousands of tourists who pass by every day. 🕍 Cosmas and Damian, the patron saints of this basilica, were twin brothers and physicians who offered their medical services free of charge while also spreading their faith. In 303 AD, they were arrested and executed by Emperor Diocletian. After their martyrdom, they became revered as the protectors of doctors and pharmacists. 🕊️ The construction of the church incorporated two ancient Roman structures: the Library of the Square of Peace (1st century AD) and the Temple of Romulus (4th century AD). These two spaces were connected, with the circular temple section located within the Roman Forum ruins. 🏛️ The highlight of the basilica is its stunning mosaic ceiling, completed around 530 AD. It depicts the ascension of the two saints to heaven. In the center, Christ points to a star while seated on a throne of red and blue clouds. Flanking him are Saint Paul, Saint Cosmas, and Pope Felix IV on the left, and Saint Peter, Saint Damian, and Saint Theodore on the right. The apostles are represented as lambs below. 🌟 Opening Hours: 10:00 – 13:00, 15:00 – 18:00 #DiscoveringItaly #ItalyTravel #TravelBeyondTheBucketList #RomeTravel
