Say Hello to the Shedd Aquarium’s New Two-Toed Sloth
The [Shedd Aquarium](https://secretchicago.com/shedd-aquarium-baby-penguins/) has a new slow-moving, tree-dwelling resident—a two-toed sloth named Alface (pronounced al-FAH-see). Here’s everything to know about the cuddly critter and when you can visit her! All about Alface ---------------- Alface recently arrived at the Shedd from the Dallas Zoo where she was born in 2023. The two-toed sloth is native to the Amazon rainforest of South America. Alface’s name means “lettuce” in Portuguese, a nod to both her heritage and her favorite snack! The climbing critter’s vegetarian diet also includes sweet potatoes, greens, grapes, and mangos. Since arriving at Shedd, Alface has been gradually acclimating to her new environment behind the scenes and cozying up to her new caretakers. According to Shedd, much of Alface’s day is spent sleeping and digesting food at a slow rate. “Once she’s ready, we’re excited to bring Alface face-to-face with guests, inspiring them to care for sloths and the other animals that call the Amazon Rainforest home,” said Katie Majerowski, manager of animal engagement. “Every encounter with an animal at Shedd can be the spark that inspires conservation action, which truly brings the aquarium’s mission to life.” With wild two-toed sloths facing deforestation and habitat loss, Alface’s arrival marks a major conservation win for the Shedd. The animal’s presence will raise awareness of the critical threats facing the Amazon. Animal-lovers can plan on visiting the adorable creature in her new home soon. Check back here for updates!
