These Michelin-Starred Chicago Restaurants Are Among the Best in the Country According to a New Ranking
Chicago is food city through and through, and two local restaurants are representing our city’s thriving culinary scene on the national stage. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has named Smyth and Kasama among its 2025 roundup of top North American dining destinations. Here’s everything to know about these standout Chicago eateries. Smyth claimed the number 4 spot on North America’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2025. The award is just one of many the establishment has received since opening in 2016 under the direction of Chefs John Shields and Karen Urie Shields. Smyth is one of only 16 restaurants in the U.S. to hold three Michelin stars, the highest distinction awarded by the esteemed food guide. As for what sets it apart from other fine dining spots in Chicago, 50 Best credits Smyth’s focus on locally sourced ingredients. “Lots of places claim to be farm-to-table. But at Smyth, the produce comes from The Farm, an actual nearby farm with which they have a relationship,” notes the ranking. “Select crops are grown specifically for the Fulton Market District restaurant, including vegetables that aren’t found on menus anywhere else in Chicago.” Coming in at number 31 on the list is Kasama, the Ukrainian Village bakery and restaurant redefining Filipino-American cooking. Kasama has gained a dedicated local following for its creative pastries featuring exotic flavors like black truffle and ube. The menu also features a selection of savory Filipino comfort dishes like rice bowls and chicken adobo. Husband and wife team Tim Flores and Genie Kwon opened the eatery in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Against all odds, Kasama shot to stardom and became the first Filipino-American restaurant to earn a Michelin star in 2022. Additionally, the restaurant gained some major cultural cred in 2023 after featuring in an episode of the popular FX show [“The Bear.”](https://secretchicago.com/the-bear-cast-chicago-restaurants-2025/) “The awards Kasama has received are not just for the food but as a signal to many that Filipino food, which has long been overlooked in fine dining, is a worthy seatmate at the global table,” notes The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
