Washington D.C. | Lincoln Memorial & Surroundings

Starting from the Lincoln Memorial (open 24 hours ๐Ÿ•’), walk east along the Reflecting Pool, passing the World War II Memorial (fountain plaza โ›ฒ) and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (black V-shaped wall inscribed with the names of the fallen ๐Ÿ–ค), all the way to the Washington Monument. The area is filled with various memorials, perfect for outdoor photography ๐Ÿ“ธ. The Lincoln Memorial was established in honor of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (in office 1861-1865). It is located on the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., at the approach to the Arlington Memorial Bridge. It is a classic example of eclecticism in architecture ๐Ÿ›๏ธ. Designed by architect Henry Bacon in 1913, the memorial was completed in 1922. For this project, Bacon received the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects in 1923 ๐Ÿ…. The memorial is rectangular in plan, approximately 58 meters long, 36 meters wide, and 25 meters high. It is a revivalist structure modeled after the Parthenon of ancient Greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท, constructed using marble. Thirty-six Doric-style columns form a colonnade surrounding the memorial, each representing one of the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's presidency. The name of each state is engraved on the frieze above the columns. Inside the memorial, the seated statue of Lincoln is carved from Georgia marble, stands 5.7 meters tall, and is the work of renowned American sculptor Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽจ.
