This is one of six memorials to Lincoln in the district, this one having the distinction of being the oldest existing memorial to Lincoln in the country. This statue was paid for by the residents of DC, purportedly to convey their loyalty to the union and decrease the chances of retribution for the president being slain in their town. The largest amount of funding was provided by the owner of Ford’s theatre. The chosen sculptor was reported to be a friend of Lincoln’s, and had been present in Ford’s theatre on the night of the assassination.
