Waterfront Space ~ ποΈπ§
Site Location: Chicago, USA Site Area: 3.5 acres Design Overview: Leveraging diverse restorative strategies, the project creates an inviting riverside trail system that revives the historic charm of the Chicago River. πΆβοΈ Once a meandering marshland, the river was later channelized into an engineered waterway to accommodate the cityβs industrial shift. π± The design challenge? To craft a vision for six blocks between State Street and Lake Street ππΊοΈ. Building on prior river studies, the plan integrates the lakefront and urban pedestrian networks while tackling technical hurdles: π³ expanding walkable space within a constrained 7.6-meter-wide built zone and harmonizing with a series of under-bridge crossings between blocks. π¦ Plus, the site must adapt to the riverβs annual flood cycles, which create nearly two meters of vertical fluctuation ππ. Innovative Approach: The design breaks from architecture-centric, right-angled pathways, instead treating the trail as a self-sustaining system. By morphing its form, it sparks dynamic new functional connections with the river ππ. New Connections, Vibrant Riverfront Life: Each block takes a unique shape, embodying a river-centric function. Hereβs the lineup: Pier Plaza π³οΈπ½οΈ: Restaurants and alfresco seating let diners soak in river drama: barge traffic, fireboat patrols, water taxis, and sightseeing cruises. Little Cove ποΈπ±: Inspired by sandy shores, flat concrete benches evoke beach stones, while greenery mimics dune grasses, sporadic wetland plants, and corner shade trees. Riverside Theater ππ³: Sculptural steps linking Upper Wacker and the riverfront offer pedestrian access, framed by leafy canopies that provide natural shade. Pier & Floating Wetland Gardens π£πΈ: A cluster of piers and floating wetland islands create an interactive learning hub for river ecology, with fishing spots and native plant education. Water Plaza π¦π¨π©π§π¦: Aquatic features invite kids and families to splash, play, and connect with the riverβs edge. #Chicago #ChicagoLife #ChicagoRiverwalk ππ§
