We regularly go to L Law for breakfast on King William Rd Hyde Park and the food is always tremendous.
On Sunday however, I was invited to a Father's day lunch, that my kids shouted at L Law, assuming it would be as great as the breakfasts we regularly have here, but wow, what a huge disappointment the whole meal was, to the extent I was getting angry, particularly knowing how much my kids (who don't earn much) spent for this occasion.
$65/head.....we had the option to either chose individual meals (with prices marked) or allow the chef to select 5 courses on the menu or we chose 5, so we decided to give the chef's recommendation a go.
It was obvious after just the first two meals came out, they were the cheapest on the entire list (bread and dip - nice taste) and Barramundi wings (only 4 wings for 6 people with the most strong, pungent flavour, 3 of us just couldn't eat).
We then asked to select the wagyu beef for fear only the cheap vegetable dishes would be served from the "Chef's choice option", which they agreed to, thanks. The braised pork was nice... Then came two plates of a thick slice of cauliflower (individually priced at $35....yep that's $70 for two slices of cauliflower).....which was served crunchy and undercooked, again served with another pungent sauce!...the two plates were left after everyone looked at each other with an unimpressed expression.
Then mixed salad came out, looking like straight from the Woolies salad bag and poured into a bowl....zero dressing, dry, like eating grass...I normally love mixed salad. By this stage the staff knew everyone was becoming really annoyed, particularly knowing the total price was nearly $400 for the six of us (plus drinks).
The wagyu steak then arrived...a single plate of about 9 strips of low-grade chewy, fatty meat strips (I had half a strip and left the rest)....Priced at $60 for that one plate if you had bought it separately....Yep, $60 bucks! After numerous apologies...we got two complimentary bowls of undercooked broccoli...Bonus! Desserts....CrÚme Brûlée - runny custard (like poured straight out of the carton), bitter crust....also crunchy "icy" ice cream.
Anyway, by this time I and the rest of us were so over it all, again for me, knowing how much my kids had spent on what can only be described as a disastrous Father's Day lunch. I'll stick to breakfasts here, but never again a...
Read moreThis place was a complete pleasant surprise.
We were originally headed to our usual brunch spot (my partner is mildly obsessed with Commitment Issues and their smashed avo), only to arrive at 1:50 p.m. and be told (after being seated) that the kitchen had already closed. Bit ironic for a place open till 3 p.m... Might want to consider renaming themselves "Time Management Issues."
Anyway, with a hangry and caffeine-deprived partner on my hands, I turned to Google in desperation for a place that could match the quality we were after. Thatâs when L.Law popped up. A few photos and glowing reviews later, I gave them a ring (their listed hours say 4 p.m. opening) just to be sureâand yes, they were open and had space for us.
Tucked away quietly on King William Road, L.Law has a lovely calm vibe and a menu thatâs Japanese-inspired with familiar cafĂ© staples woven in. I ordered the Wagyu Sando, my partner went for (you guessed it) the Smashed Avo. We also got a double shot cappuccino, a No Sugar Coke, and shared a side of Hot Chilli Halloumi.
And honestly... wow. As frustrating as Commitment Issues were, I kind of have to thank them, because everything here was fantastic. The coffee? My very picky, self-proclaimed coffee snob of a partner said it might be the best sheâs ever had. The Sando was juicy and full of flavour, and the halloumi was the perfect spicy-salty side. Partner gave two enthusiastic thumbs up for the Smashed Avo too.
So yep, safe to say weâll be back. Highly recommend checking it out if youâre in the area (or even if youâre not). L.Law Hyde Park has officially...
Read moreEnjoyed a coffee here a few months ago. Cosy restaurant, not too noisy, elegant environment with attractive artwork. Finally made it back for lunch...really good experience. Service by two waitresses was cheerful, informative and friendly. Tried shared plate of Golden Bars for starters...unique and tasty crispy outer, soft and savoury ?fritter type morsels. Mains included Special Prawn with Angel Hair Pasta dish in tasty coconut sauce...prawns were smallish but plentiful...a delicious dish. Crispy Pork Belly Green Goddess salad and Crispy Pork Belly Rice Bowl were enjoyed by fellow diners. Finished with decent coffee and Mini Peach and Passionfruit Ceesecakes...no biscuit base...bonus...and not too sweet. Meals are reasonably priced and decent sized serves. We'll be back to try the Laksa and other interesting options...and enjoy the...
