17/07/17 - So I'm back for another visit to UQ and thought I'd give you an update. Thanks for listening to my input about the breakfast paninis. The trays make a huge difference and is much appreciated. The coffees on the other hand still need work, I've pasted a photo to demonstrate;
I picked these up the minute they were called out, as soon as I held them, I felt that one was lighter than the other. Upon inspection, you can see the contrast between them. The coffee on the left was the standard I was introduced to and fell in love with in Jan 2016, gorgeous creamy froth on the top. The one on the right is what my partner and I are becoming accustomed to. It was somewhat amusing to receive both in one sitting.
As I said 2 months ago, the slight decrease in customer value won't stop us from coming. However, if you're hoping for consistency, you're not getting it. If I took a wild guess as to what the cause is, it would be the consistent changing of staff (students that have graduated and left, perhaps?), so I understand your predicament. Either way, my expectations have changed from now on. It's still a lot better than pretty much everywhere else, for now.
P.S. I wasn't even a coffee drinker until I walked into Merlo 18 months ago, it's both a blessing and a curse! 2 months ago
Still decent enough, used to be better. The lattés are too milky these days and God knows WHY you would put the serviette UNDER a toasted panini which has melting cheese. The serviette can't be used as it has cheese and oil all through it. Seriously, put it under the tray/plate.
It's not enough to stop us from visiting, but each visit is always followed with a mild sense of disappointment, especially since the prices have been jacked up post...

On October 1st (today), I intent to buy a large hot choc ($5.40) at Merlo UQ St Lucia. I intent to redeem my bean dollars ($5) as stated in my account, but after scanning my membership, the staff said the machine cannot read the bean dollar, so I still have to pay in full price. Therefore, I decided to buy a small one ($4.90). A few minutes ago, I checked my account and my bean dollars has been redeemed on October 1st. Can you guys explain this? In all my years studying and teaching at UQ, Merlo has consistently delivered friendly faces and delicious coffee, which is a big ask for a team that serves mostly vacant customers. Like today? Fantastic coffee. These people are keeping me alive.
But to the middle management woman in the hideous tan blazer: do not walk between your baristas and their coffee machines. Do not bombard them with 'feedback' or instructions while they're trying to do their job. With absolute seriousness, do not ruin this coffee...
