Good coffee and very friendly staff. However they sold me undoubtedly the worst bread and butter pudding I have ever eaten. I am a big fan of a good bread and butter pudding, and this was unacceptable. I was terribly hungry when I went, and the kitchen was closed, so I was ready to eat just about anything. Having to force down the bread and butter pudding almost made me sick. The bread was not well blended into the delicious, dense, sweet mass that we usually associate with bread and butter pudding, but was instead simply raw bread, with the crusts sticking out. It seemed as though the entirety of the sauce had congealed into a mass around the base of the pudding. Perhaps this totally unbaked pudding would be edible were it warm, but it was served totally cold. I hate to leave a negative review, because the other aspects of this place were very pleasant, and the coffee was very serviceable. I'm sure they have many other tasty food options, and I made a poor choice, but I cannot let this stand. That bread and butter pudding would be unacceptable were it sold at a child's sidewalk bake-sale, and the fact that a nice cafe/restaurant felt it could serve it truly...

I have been coming to this restaurant for years, only because of its location. Don’t try coming here within 1 hour of closing or you will be made to feel uncomfortable - as though you’re an inconvenience to the staff. They close off the outside around with 45 minutes to go. If you’re inside, they’ll come past with 15 minuets to go and let you know they close shortly, which on its own is fine. But then they’ll start stacking chairs and franetically pack up everything around you while you are trying to enjoy your coffee. Here’s a tip to management: save packing up until after the time you advertise your cafe as closing; rather than while people are trying to enjoy what they paid good money for. Otherwise advertise the closing time as earlier. I honestly don’t know why some people go into business. Also, why is there always one person serving the long line while five or six people wander around the cafe aimlessly. It seems reasonable that your guests would prefer not to have long...

Got eggs benedict and a coffee $30 One of the two poached eggs was raw in the middle (the whole egg white was raw and uncooked, where it was slimy and sliding all over the plate) The first egg/half of the toast was fine, but i stopped eating when cutting into the second egg and half the toast was left.

Sent it back to the kitchen.

A woman (possibly the chef) came to bring it out, and was acting very strange and put it on the table with a smirk and a lot of attitude.

My company noticed this weird interaction and the woman kept looking back at our table making us feel quite awkward. We just laughed it off.

Upon leaving and walking through the cafe to exit she was looking at us quite strangely again.

I mean if you cant poach an egg properly and still leave the egg white completely raw to the point where it’s transparent slime don’t give me attitude when i return it?

Anyways, very generic food - nice spot though, shame about the strange...

Lovely cafe adjacent to the National Library. It has a large indoor area which can be accessed from inside the library and a beautiful large outdoor area over looking the lake. The menu is concise but offers a good array of sweet & savoury dishes from lighter to more substantial dishes. The cakes are yummy, coffee is well made and the chips are so so good! Loved the lighter dish with brie as well as the togarashi cauliflower dish. The ham, cheese & tomato toastie was on lovely three mills sourdough and the barramundi dish was delicious. Burger was thoroughly enjoyed although the meat was a little on the dry side. Chairs outside should be cleaned more frequently as most had bird poo but as to be expected being outdoors. Overall a lovely spot with good food and service.

Great! Just don’t come here alone. Friendly staff. However, management/training at thisplace leaves something to be desired. All in all a subpar experience. Instead of table service, they have a strange system for walk in-s where the customer has to pick your own table and then order at the counter. I didn’t have anyone with me to mind a table I picked, so I found theoretically anyone could have sat down at “my” table while I was in the ordering queue. Or if you leave the table with your number on it, the staff may pack it away. Also there is no sign to say a 1% surcharge applies to card payments. Front of house forgot to tell me too. Also they gave me a knife and fork to eat my porridge with??? Food and setting good though. I had the warm apple porridge.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the Bookplate, nestled within the national library, and it was a delight for both the senses. I ordered their oat cappuccino and it was rich, robust, and brewed to perfection. Their orange glazed duck breast with salad was succulently bathed in citrus notes, although the portion seemed a tad petite in relation to the price. My favourite was the falafel bowl, a vibrant tapestry of flavours and textures. The crispy falafel orbs stood out among a medley of Mediterranean delights like the tangy pickled cabbage, nutty chickpeas and rich hummus. They will be closed for renovation in February and March, and we look forward to coming back after their reopening in April.
