The Old Canberra Inn — Restaurant in District of Canberra Central

Great place to go and have a drink, not so great for a meal. We ordered via the QR code on the table - a beef burger with gf bun and no dressing on the salad, a vegan curry and two fish and chips. The gluten free burger bun was one of the worst gf buns I’ve had, the patty was over cooked, plus the burger salad had dressing so had to take it back. The poor waitress seemed very frustrated that the kitchen hadn’t read the order notes. My wife who is pregnant asked the bar staff if the vegan curry was very spicy before ordering to which they replied no, however it was so hot she could barely eat it. I love spicy things but it was even too hot for me to eat. The fish and chips had more batter than fish so my in laws just sat there picking it off the whole time lol. I don’t know if this was just a one off bad night but the kitchen could do with some more training if not a complete overhaul. Compared to other pubs we’ve eaten at it’s definitely sub par. Old, rustic, colonial style pub with indoor and outdoor seating and a cozy atmosphere. I went with a large group on a Sunday afternoon. Orders are taken via a link from a QR code on each table. Our table was very unfortunate in that the orders were lost in the ether some where and it was around 2 hours many of us waited for our food. I was the most disappointed with my lamb kofta meat balls looking dry and unappealing- a little greenery may have helped! The chips definitely needed the sauce they came with. Some of the other meals looked more appetising. The arancini balls were a hit with some of our group. The afternoon entertainment was pleasant. Overall, we had a pleasant time and it seems a good space to get together with some mates. I wouldn’t go just for the food. I’d say 2 ⭐️ for the food but 3 ⭐️for the atmosphere. Still an amazing place for food and drinks. Service is next level good and the overall experience was perfect. Couldnt recommend coming here enough!

Excellent old style pub, has exactly the feel you want and the name says it all.

Staff are very friendly and was really nice to see them making sure it was all Covid safe and people had masks on. Had a group of guys walk in with masks around their chin or not even on, pulled them up right away.

Food was so hot and fresh we had to wait to eat it, was absolutely burning hot, just what you want from a meal. Everything was delicious, seasoned perfectly and overall really well done. The French fries dip was outrageous, get extra if you can.
