A stand-out in Manjimup and an unexpected surprise. I was booked in here by my wife for my birthday.
We started with fresh ciabatta, warmed olives and a trout pate. All were very good but gave no real clue about what was to come.
She had the vegetable gnocchi which she said was excellent with gnocchi made fresh in-house. It looked terrific with a variety of fresh vegies in a light cheesy sauce, not too rich.
I had a Pemberton sirloin cooked to medium. Until that night I had never understood why anyone would go on about how good a steak was. I'm 63, I've had a few steaks before now, some were ok, some were good, some were bloody awful but I've never thought they were anything special. I mean, a chunk of fried meat is a chunk of fried meat, right ? It's not like it's spring lamb or Capretto.
Best steak ever. Whoever their Chef is they know good meat and how to cook it, that person understands steak. Cooked perfectly, pink on the inside, crisp on the outside and as soft as butter, the flavour was exquisite and perfectly matched with butter and basil sauce with a red wine jus. I have never had better, epiphany achieved.
It was served with in house hash browns which doesn't do them justice, forget anything you've had at a takeaway or bought at the supermarket, the perfect accompaniment.
We shared a Panacotta for dessert which was also first class and prior to dinner had two well made cocktails, a Martini and a Margarita. The wine for the night was a local Shiraz, Peo's Four Aces, well worth the asking price. The only fault all night was a slightly burnt coffee, after that meal I can forgive them that.
Can recommend, genuinely surprised by what we had, we were expecting glorified pub food and got as good a meal as we've had anywhere outside of the Loose Box (sadly long closed) or Balthazar (still going strong) . Congratulations guys, a top effort and an asset...
Read moreWe visited there last Friday. The staff were nice and helpful. The bar/restaurant is lovely, spacious with a warm feel about it. We sat outside. This area is lovely too and well presented with lots of heating 👍 A great selection of wine and of course their beers. The menu had a selection of things. Between us we chose the gnocchi, steak sandwich & Angus beef burger.
The gnocchi was lovely, tasted great and well presented.
The steak sandwich I was told was just ok, could have been better for the price - what seemed to be a quick minute steak and some iceberg lettuce on a Turkish bread with chips🤷♀️
The Angus beef burger was definitely a disappointment for $24! Expecting a thick Angus burger (I wrongly assumed it would be a hand formed burger like so many other places are offering) I asked for my burger med/well. WELL I think Macca have thicker burgers in their quarter pounder!!!
I think a bit of poetic licence has been use when writing the menu, it should have read ' A thin burger in a bun with barley a scraping of tomato chutney and the thinnest slice of cheese, all topped with a fatty anaemic slice of bacon and thinly sliced iceberg lettuce served with a side chips' I ate it, there was no reason to return it as there wasn't anything actually wrong with what was on the plate-it was just not as the menu lead me to believe.
So to sum up, Tall Tumbers is a lovely place, well presented. As Manjimup is small it would be one of the limited places to have a drink and some food, it was busy. I think though that some consideration could be used in the future in what I've mentioned, especially as the prices are a...
