I was put on to this place by a (fellow kiwi) friend when we lived in Melbourne from 2009-2013. Us Kiwis know great fish n chips (fush n chups?) when we eat them. My wife and I are still often disappointed when someone recommends a fish n chip shop here in AU and we find the common thin, watery, tasteless fish sliding out of the batter. We now travel to Melbourne from Sydney to go to Centreway Fish n Chips 2-3 times a year! Of course we enjoy other things Melbourne has to offer, but we mostly come for the fish! Well worth the 9 hr drive. It is freshly market bought every morning and is the thick white "fish steak" type consistency we are used to back in NZ where we are spoilt with great fish. If you've never been. Make a point to try it You won't be disappointed. Next time you're in Melbourne from NZ, QLD or NSW, anywhere, it is without a doubt just like home and ALWAYS the same great taste, texture with light crisp batter (so many other shops batters are are soggy here in AU). Booker is always very friendly and I met Tom for the 1st time earlier this month. He is the one that buys daily at the market. Cannot speak highly enough about this unassuming gem of a shop. Thanks guys. See you again at the end...
Read morePervious owners were fantastic but since these new people the shop has gone down hill fast, have ordered from them 4 times now. First 3 times would would be missing 2-3 items from our order. Frustrating but we looked past it. The last time how ever I made a phone order, the lady repeated everything back and then told me to come down in 35 minutes. I get there and the rude young guy on the counter laughing at me tells me I don’t know what to tell you but that won’t happen. Did you just order? I tell him I called half an hour ago and he proceeds to laugh and tell me that everyone’s currently waiting an hour and half and there’s no way we said that. Not sure why this was so funny when it was pretty clear they just misplaced my order. After the rude encounter we decided to leave to which we see a family friend pull up after us and say she was told a half an hour wait as well and 5 minutes later walks out with her fish and chips. Disgusting service from the young boy and the owner who kept telling me they would never say that. Especially when we were never rude to them about the mix...
Read moreThis used to be my favourite fish and chips place until the change of owners. Recently I went to get a large order of tasteless fish and burgers, the flake full of bones! Something I’ve never experienced before in my life with flake. The chips and potato cakes were mediocre, in the past only spending on average $80-$100 for a large order with the previous owner, who’d throw in plentiful amounts for free. Now spending $150 for subpar fish and chips and poor quality fish. Unlikely to return sadly. We waited over an hour after being told that things would be ready within 40 minutes, with walking orders being served before ours were even complete, calling...
