Gateway Charcoal Chicken — Restaurant in Melbourne

Have been coming here a long time so this review is well overdue. In pretty much any suburb there'll be a local charcoal chicken joint that you'll here is the best ever. And having tried many, many different ones this place is by far the best I've ever had.

Aside from doing great chickens that a seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of crisp on the skin, their side options are just as good in their own right. Best gravy I've had, ever. Not even a contest, this stuff is off the charts good! Scalloped potatoes are addictive, you've been warned. Generous amounts of freshly made chips with just the right amount of chicken salt and a perfect crunch, roast potatoes the same. And the salads, damn! Personal favourite is the chicken macaroni salad, but I've had several others and never been disappointed.

Needless to say I highly recommend you grab a chook with your favourite sides for dinner or drop in for a meal pack. Quarter chicken and chips for less...

Unfortunately this was the worst Charcoal Chicken chips we have ever had.

The chicken was tasteless - no charcoal flavouring whatsoever. The meat was dry. The Chicken skin was soft, oily and not crispy like a standard charcoal chicken.

We ordered a Family pack - the chips were bland and it is evident the fryer oil is screaming to be replaced.

The man cutting up chicken behind the counter was eating bits of chicken during his food service and was not wearing gloves. The man did not wash his hands after having his fingers near his mouth. He was also coughing.

The store was busy on a Friday night so we had higher expectations judging by how busy the store was and other Google reviews.

Pricing is standard for a food shop of its type but I wouldn’t return in a hurry for a...

I highly recommend going here, (my first time here, just to get chips and gravy for the grandaughter,) What a lovely man serving (owner at a guess) friendly and very pleasant... one place you certainly get value for your dollar... $4 chips and gravy....and he really piles up the chips, so much so I had to ask him not to fill mine as I'd struggle to eat that much (i dont like wasting food, especially with how hard things are for people these days) he was very obliging.making sure I got as much as I wanted.... Great choices on the menu and plenty of salads to choose from to go with your meal, or just salad on its own... Very clean shop fast and efficient service so no long wait........
