If I could give the food a one star I would. Me and my partner made a booking for two which we had to put a card down for in case of no show. Which is understandable but what is a little outrages is the no show fee being $40. First red flag, but we were hungry and tired and just wanted a meal.
When we arrived we were greeted by staff who are very friendly and welcoming. The service is ok but their down fall is when they asked our order and didn’t write it down. What ever maybe they have good memory. Well they don’t have good memory. They came back out to ask which burger had bacon added to it. Which I didn’t mind at the time but then our drinks came out and we had specifically asked for no ice. What did the cups have in them. Ice.
Next the food. This needs a whole review on it’s own. I’ll give them props for the fast service, the food did come out quite fast. But that’s when the positives stop. We ordered two burgers two drinks and a thing of chips. My partners burger was dry and burnt had no flavour and was very chewy. My burger was all right by bland and looked raw, and the chips tasted like they had been heated up in a microwave. Not wanting to waste food we ate the food. In total we were there for under 30 minutes.
When we went to go pay we tried to inform the staff in a polite way that the food was not very good. The chef then got quite defensive and made it sound like it was our fault. When it came to the total of the food it came to $75 dollars!! I refer to my early statement of what we ordered. 2 burgers, 2 drinks and some chips!! How does that add up to $75 dollars? When I looked back at the menu online which had been updated 6 days ago I added up our total and the closest I could get to $75 was $61 which is still pretty outrageous for the quality of the food. Unless they’re really leaning into the American restaurant theme and they are using usd not aud i have no idea how they got to that total. I am also quite livered that my partner wasted $75.
Overall I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone unless they like living on the edge of getting food poisoning and spending your life saving then I would recommend. I am very disappointed over all and do...
Read moreWhat good is a sandwich if the bread is stale? Not jolly.
After reading rave reviews of an experience leaving customers longing for more, we decided to give Jolly Good a go.
Staff were pleasant and attentive, the fit out is clean and chic. We were the only customers in there so had the pick of the litter as to where we’d like to dine. Opting for the window as to soak in the culture of Collingwood as opposed to bunking down in a booth.
We already knew what we wanted—figured a French Dip and a classic Chicken Sandwich would cover the cornerstones of a good sandwich—as important to the structural integrity of the business as the great pillars that sat inside.
A last minute decision to add a side of fries meant our order complete— I teased the idea of a peach iced tea but couldn’t justify the $8.
Our sandwiches arrived shortly after. The sourdough looked fresh—the sandwich filled with poached chicken, cucumber, lettuce and citrus and herb mayo with the added cheese ($19 total).
Immediately after sinking my teeth into the first bite I knew. I didn’t want to believe it. I know if business is slow you may not get through the days quota of fresh bread, but if you pride yourself on delivering fresh sandwiches at a premium price in a premium establishment—why not ensure that every customer gets your best? I understand throwing away yesterday’s bread seems like a waste, but it sure as hell beats giving it to customers— especially first time customers who are looking for a reason to return and try more.
The chips felt like they’d received the same treatment— lacking in fluffiness and texture—rather having the consistency of dried-out cardboard deep fried with the hope the oil can rehydrate and replenish.
What to do? Our host was so positive? They didn’t make the sandwich, someone else in the kitchen did. Did they have an off day? Do you bring it to their attention? What do you hope to gain in that interaction? I don’t want an apology. I don’t want a discount. I want what’s been advertised—“a unique culinary adventure with top-notch sandwiches”.
Unfortunately these sandwiches were not of the highest quality nor excellent but at least the...
Read moreDon’t be misled by the name—Jolly Good Diner may evoke thoughts of a no-frills, casual joint, but this Collingwood gem is much more than that. This is a proper restaurant with a diner-style ambiance, serving restaurant-quality food that rivals some of Melbourne’s finest spots. With an impressive wine list, expertly crafted cocktails, and a selection of beers on tap, Jolly Good Diner offers much more than your typical diner fare.
Collingwood is no stranger to great burger spots, but Jolly Good stands apart. While you’ll find plenty of burger joints in the area, none offer the same diner-inspired vibe as Jolly Good. There are burgers with smashed or regular patties catering for both types of the burger aficionados. Both are excellent.
And if you’re craving something a bit more indulgent, you won’t be disappointed by the fried chicken. Ordered by the piece, this fried chicken is shatteringly crispy on the outside and moist inside—an absolute must-try for any fried chicken lover.
For those seeking a more restaurant-style meal, Jolly Good’s menu doesn’t disappoint. The pork cotoletta is golden and tender, and the baked pasta is rich and comforting, all dishes that feel like they’ve been pulled straight from a classic restaurant menu.
The drink selection includes a range of beers on tap, and for anyone seeking a bit of American nostalgia, Jolly Good has you covered. Their Long Island Iced Tea features a special twist with Dr. Pepper, bringing back memories of those classic American flavors in an update to this classic cocktail.
No meal at Jolly Good is complete without a slice of their American-style pie. It's the perfect ending to your diner meal.
Overall, Jolly Good Diner in Collingwood delivers a unique dining experience that combines the best of both diner and restaurant vibes. Whether you’re after a hearty burger, an indulgent piece of fried chicken, or a steak, this place has it all—and it’s a standout in a neighborhood already known...
