Pass through the white curtains that completely block out any view of the interior and travel back in time to 1986. It’s the Chinese restaurant from a bygone era: red tassles hanging on from faux carved chandaliers, paper placemats with Chinoiserie designs, prawn chips… and all the patrons are white! The food is what you’d expect: westernised versions of Chinese food: beef with oyster sauce, cashew chicken, and so on. Sometimes one craves this sort of fare, but the execution at Pearl Garden is uneven. Lots of veggies, but kind of low on flavour. I’d give it three stars, but there was a thick black hair in our chicken… not mine!

Visited this hidden gem today thanks to a Facebook group called Dim Sims 4 Lyfe whose recommendations advised us to try their home made Dim Sims. As a self proclaimed connoisseur of the humble Dim Sim, I must agree these dimmies were sensational. We also treated ourselves to some beautifully cooked curried beef with fried rice and braised steak and fried noodles. The meat was as tender as can be and the bonus for both of us was no MSG in any of it. Friendly young man looked after us... Pearl Garden has now become our go-to for good Aussie Chinese and one of the best Dim Sims in Melbourne. Highly recommended... 😋

They have a good chef at the moment. Go once a week now for takeaway. Usually have Seafood Birdsnest. I also had a serve of Singapore Spring Rolls (2 per serve). Really nice meal.

We've been coming here for over 38 years and we were very sad to see the old owners go, food and service was always excellent. We dined in for the first time with the new owners Sunday just gone and I have to say I wasn't very impressed...I hope its just that they haven't settled in yet. Meals didn't come out together for entrees and then again for mains and my daughters meal was completely missed until we spoke with them. The restaurant phone rang continuously and for long periods of time and it was a loud terrible ring tone which interrupted dinner conversation. I'd like to know if they have put MSG back into the food as I found i had tummy cramps and tossed and turned all night. So basically they need to be more organised, need to put those that are dining in ahead of their takeaway orders, table service needs to be improved and items not forgotten and if MSG has been added take it out...please change the phone ringtone or have a dedicated staff member to answer it quickly and efficiently. I would hate to stop coming after all this time as...
