Upwey Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Melbourne

Outstanding. We have struggled for several years now to buy decent fish and chips in the hills and went to Belgrave for the last time more than a month ago because it is always overcooked. Tried Upwey Fish and Chips and were so impressed. Batter was beautiful, fish was juicy and chips great. Could not fault it and will definitely be coming here in the future. Can't believe we had waited so long before trying it.

Sadly, I have now had more frustrating experiences than good. After my review fish has been consistently overcooked and on one occasion when I asked for battered snapper, it came grilled. Last time there, I wass told 10 minutes to pick up which I think turns out a pretty decent piece a fish. When I got there he said 5 more minutes, but when an Uber Eats guy turned up, he became the focus and my fish continued to cook. When I finally asked if it was going to be overcooked, the guy who cooked it held it up and pointed to the dark golden colour of the batter and reported look at how it looks. Sure enough, got home and it was so overcooked it was dry. Near where I work, batter is always light golden, 10 minutes is the only time they take to cook a piece of fish, and it is always juicy and delicious. Quite sure locals are reviewing this place a lot better than it actually is.

Calamari was bordering burnt territory. All items you can tell the oil is seldom changed or the fryers not cleaned in ever. Drastically affects the taste and colour. When fish n chip shops put in effort it tastes clean, fresh. Decided to dice the batter rather than put inside of me.

Despite the salt. The mixed pack tasted a dirty brown bland. Except for the dim sum which was the only thing to have a distinguishable flavour. Which isn’t a huge credit as it’s a store bought item.

I’ve had better chips in my life and worse chips. This joint seems to get business due to lack of better option.

Marked atmosphere lower. Feel sorry for y’all on a hot day and fryers going. Hot enough inside the store to air fry the fish to be honest. Needs some ventilation. Perhaps why the kebab meat looks off putting?

Service was the saving grace. But if the food doesn’t taste better than 5/10. Then it’s not worth...

I like these hardworking business and love to see people working hard. The front of house was Wilfred, I was nearly going to ask for a glass of water to throw on his shoes as I think they were about to catch fire 🔥 because he was running so fast 😜on the grill making my dinner was another hard worker basically it was a beehive.
