Disappointing. I was told this was one of the best places to get proper fish and chips, having had some fairly rough experiences. It's not all bad, but it fell very short of the gold standard. Certainly not worth the 20k drive.
They offer a wide menu, and this may be the problem, as they're spread too thin. But this is about the fish and chips.
The chips themselves were better than average, although a little dry. The local potatoes available may have a lot to do with that. They weren't greasy, fried in a decent oil rather than animal fat. If you're looking for a cholesterol special followed by a coronary bypass then keep looking, but if you're after authentic British style chip this is close.
The fish, however, wasn't great. I don't know what they did to it but it was like it was cooked in extremely light tempura batter or possibly dusted in flour and grilled. No golden batter, and somewhat dry. She such a let down when we got home and opened it. It was probably a reasonable, but thin, bit of fish to start with.
They do, however, do a decent vegan burger, which is hard to find, so it's not a total disaster. But if it's traditional British-style fish and chips, I'm afraid this isn't it. Although I have actually had worse, and at a higher price, in the...
Read moreWhy break what was working so well? We used to drive from Yea for dinners here weekly, but sadly won’t be anymore since the new owners changed the amazing chips to the generic packet ones the same as everywhere else. And scratched out the ‘wagyu’ to be just ‘beef’ for all meat orders. What was once the special treat deluxe fish and chip dinner, has now turned into same same generic fish and chips and not worth the trip. Quite bummed out because it really was great. The old owners made a well oiled machine and the new owners seem to be taking away all that made it unique and tasty. The new chips may be cheaper to buy wholesale wise, but is it worth the loss of custom? Pay more for good produce and you keep the customers coming back time and time again turning over more profit. Cutting costs isn’t the answer to more profit when it’s sending customers away. Good food is the answer, which sadly has been taken...
Read moreI am a local in YG. Previous owners had a rocky start but took feedback on board and ended up with amazing food with Perfectly battered flake, chips cooked in the freshest oil. New recent owners seem to also be having a rocky start. I feel like the flakes are now way thinner and they try disguise it with batter. Flake is so over battered in thick batter that it is gluggy and chips and potato cakes were dark brown and shrivelled. The oil needs changing by the look of it. I hope they get it together. I will try again because its just a short stroll from home for us but I sincerely hope it improves. I wanted to give 1 star but I gave 3 for the fiod only because I know they are new and possibly teething, and I am hoping for...
