If you're like me, you're probably scouring conflicting reviews for half a dozen local Chinese takeaways in the area. You're not looking for "the best"; just the least-risk option. Seems Chinese Takeaway isn't what it used to be. But how would I know, I'm not Chinese.
The Golden Lake at Gorokan was a surprise as soon as you walk in the door. It's brightly lit with equally bright white floor tiles. More like a cafe feel than a traditional Chinese. Perhaps not the most intimate settings for a romantic date if that's what you had in mind.
Two young Australians (no disrespect to Chinese-Australians) were working the counter & took my order promptly, courteously & competently. They quoted a wait time of 15-20 minutes & they were bang on, with my order handed to me in a neat, recycled paper carry bag, complete with string handles. 100% score for service & presentation.
We had the Mongolian Lamb, Beef w/Black Bean, Honey chicken & fried rice. The rice was very mild, very light, quite nice. The Lamb however was sublime. Absolutely delicious. The beef had an extra spice or two that I wasn't expecting, & kind of lingered (recommend chocolate afterwards), and unfortunately the Honey Chicken could have done a few seconds less in the deep fryer. It was a bit over-cooked & crispy, & the small pieces potentially had more batter than chicken. I guess that however that that could be variable & hopefully not the norm.
Overall, it was a good feed. At about $65, there were other places potentially more expensive. Maybe for some people who eat out regularly, that's nothing, but for me it was a big deal.
Nonetheless, I give my experience 8.5/10, with points deducted for tonights' chicken offering & the mystery spices. First-world problems, sure, but I recommend to anyone unsure where to try, to give Golden Lake a go.
My compliments, thanks & best wishes to the owners, cooks & counter staff, & I hope this review brings you...
Read moreWe had a great evening there. Upon arrival we were given menus right away, followed by 2 glasses & a glass bottle of water. Many other restaurants you have to beg for service & are constantly asking for things, which should come as good service. Meals came out fast. The short soup & sweet corn chicken soup came out in big bowls (rather than the tiny plastic ones you get elsewhere), with a decent portion of wontons & real chunks of chicken in the sweet corn chicken soup.
Main was delicious as well. Honey chicken was majority chicken rather than batter, which is a rarity. Flavours were fantastic. Garlic chicken was also amazing as was the rice. When our bottle of water was empty, the waitress promptly swapped it over for a new bottle without needing to be asked which was great appreciated! Dessert was equally good!
My partner gave a shout out the the chef "Jo" for the great dinner, who was very grateful & gave us some complimentary fortune cookies which were greatly appreciated as we both really enjoyed them!
We'll definitely be coming back again soon! Great job keep up the amazing work &...
Read moreI recently dined at this charming Chinese restaurant, and it exceeded all my expectations. The Sweet and Sour Pork was a delightful symphony of flavors – crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and the sauce struck the perfect balance between sweet and tangy. The Pepper Sauce Steak was , perfectly cooked to my liking with a rich, savory pepper sauce that left me craving more. The staff was incredibly friendly, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that added to the overall dining experience. What impressed me the most was the affordability – high-quality dishes at such reasonable prices. This gem is a must-visit for anyone seeking delicious Chinese cuisine without breaking the bank. Five stars...
