I don't always leave a review, but when I do its because of the bad taste left in my mouth... No longer a fresh seafood restaurant which OBH was for decades, the hot and cold platter for 2 now comes with frozen/thawed prawns, frozen/thawed 'battered market fish' and an insignificant portion of S&P squid. Compared to pre-takeover the portion of seafood (fish and squid which is what we came for) barely touched the sides. I was however full of salt, due to the excessive salt on everything. No not just the bed of salt rocks that the prawns lay on, but the extra salting of everything else on the platter. It overpowered the taste of all of the seafood, and besides not feeling full, that's what made the meal disappointing. There was also added msg in this meal (thanks for the tinnitus, not)... Note. Overly salting food to encourage beverage purchases is not cool. But, I will thank you, because as a creature of habit, OBH you've motivated me to spread my wings from the known to try other establishments for future meals. Once the ringing in my ears goes away I'll consider where else we will next eat out :)

Small menu, not a heap to choose from. Basic 3 types of steak, a combo of fresh and fried seafood items with a few salads and pastas. Not much by way of indoors seating. Best to make a reservation as walk ins means you will end up outside which is fine if the weather is favourable. The views are great. The pub which connects to the bistro gets a bit rowdy. So not ideal for a quiet romantic dinner or family dining. Years ago they used to have an awesome kids menu that came with a bowl of fresh fruit salad. My daughter got a chicken schnitzel with chips and a piece of watermelon on the plate. It came with a drink. It's ok. Not amazing. I ordered surf and turf which was pretty impressive.. my only real criticism was that the plate was too small for the amount of food stacked on it. Was awkward to eat especially as we were outside in the wind. The Ocean Beach is more for drinkers who enjoy crowds. It's a pity they don't cater more for families given that there is an awesome park and beach right outside.

This place is extremely overrated. It was the worst food we've eaten in years and it was expensive too. My local take away serves better fish and chips and they do it 70% cheaper. The fish was very dry but the chips were ok. The calamari was nice but the oysters were the smallest I've ever seen. I should report them to fisheries authorities as it must be illegal to have oysters that small? The hamburger and chips cost $18 and even the kids wouldn't eat it. The Coke from the tap was terrible too. It had a very nasty aftertaste. The place is not wheelchair or pram friendly. All the tables are so crammed in that you cannot pass with a pram and none of the 3 entrances will accommodate wheelchairs. They make you pay whilst ordering, just like McDonald's, but after tasting the food we understand why. Some pros: The parking is good. Staff were friendly and the toilets were reasonable clean. We won't be back.

We’ve been travelling the East coast of Australia for the past couple of weeks with our well mannered dog. Arriving in Shellharbour NSW we googled pet friendly pubs and the Ocean Beach Hotel topped the list. After reading the reviews it was unclear if dogs were allowed as one recent post said yes and another contradicted that. As we were only 5 mins away we decided to turn up and ask. The friendly young man conferred with one of his colleagues and confirmed that as long as we sat in a particular area on the deck and tethered our dog it would be fine. Delighted to hear we ordered a round of drinks and then decided to order another along with an entree before ordering a main. When the entree arrived, the young lady serving it to us asked us if our dog was an “assistance” dog and when I replied in the negative she had informed me that he was not allowed to be on the deck. I explained to her that the only reason we were there was because we had sought clarity beforehand and she said that she needed to check. Meanwhile our canine friend was soaking up the sun lying down next to the table, causing no harm to anyone. Next minute a very apologetic young man who had originally told us it was ok to have said dog on the deck informed us mid entree that we would have to move him off the deck. I told him that I thought the situation was not ideal and that the only reason we were providing the venue with our custom was the very fact that our dog was allowed. I went on to tell him that we would finish our entree and drinks and then leave. Next minute an older woman arrives on the scene claiming to be the Manager (obviously she missed Diplomacy 101). She told us that the dog was not allowed and that we would have to move him. When we tried to explain what happened we were met with vitriol and hostility. Our unfinished entree was snatched and half a glass of wine was tipped over the balcony. Never before have I witnessed so much rudeness. Zero out of Five for me. P.S Can’t wait for the retort. The above is...

I give ocean beach hotel 0 stars. This is the first review I've ever left because I'm not one to really say negative things about a place however I was so appalled at the way we were treated at ocean beach hotel. My husband and I walked in today at around 2pm as we were going to order a seafood platter. There were two check in codes at the bar, one at the left end and one at the right end of the same bar. As I walked in there was a patron standing at one check in code at the left end of the bar so I started to walk to the other check in code at the right end to check in. The lady behind the bar starts to raise her voice and tell us we need to sign in. I explain im going to use the code just to the right of me as the other patron was still signing in using the other code. She again raised her voice and she needs to see the code. I replied saying I would show her when I sign in. Out of nowhere the bar lady just lost it and started swearing under her breath saying the f word and just totally unprofessional banter. We were so shocked we then told her that there is no need for us to check in as we are going to leave which she sarcastically yelled bye cya as we left. We honestly could not believe how rude and unprofessional this woman was at work with literally no reason at all. She literally yelled and swore at us??!! We are locals and will never come back to spend our money here again. I have never talked to anyone like that while being in a work environment in my life. Being a small local town along with attracting tourists you think the staff would have common decency not to swear or yell at customers coming to support their business but...

After having many great experiences at this hotel we invited the family for a day out. We booked a deck spot a week in advance online for 1230 we got there slightly early. Imagine our surprise to find we had been put in the worst possible place in the bistro area inside. On looking our place card was even written "deck". We found a spot on the deck already reserved for midday with none attending. So figured ok. These people had t turned up. So decided to use that table as clearly the people had cancelled/not turned up. After being at the table for over 20minutes due to very long lines for drink and food we were approached by a very rude, arrogant manager who advised us to move as this table is reserved. Still no sight of the patrons!!!! After a very distressing discussion with this manager we were informed this table was reserved for the owner of the pub. We made the decision to leave, get fish and chips and have lunch on the beach instead. From our spot on the beach we could see the table in question very well. The whole time this table was unattended. We met amazing people at the beach and had a great time. So really this was a godsend in a way. But as a business. This pub lost a lot of money from us and probably 3 or 4 other groups who tried to use the table to have a table available from the owner when they eventually turned up at 3pm as we were leaving Shellharbour. Unfortunately. Even though it's a good spot, but we won't be back due to the arrogance of the...
