Have been going to scales for a very long time and I recommend to everyone but tonight was a real let down. I rang and ordered 2 pieces of hoki but was told we don't have hoki was taken thru a list of what they did have the young girl said a few and then said dory (I love dory) so said ok 1 battered 1 grilled plz also chips n calamari. I got there and seen the ticket that stated dory then on brackets (basa) I refuse to eat basa as I hate farmed seafood. The lady said I can change it but as I was hungry couldn't be bothered I said forget it i said when is dory called basa she said there's John dory then there dory Basa I said that should have been stated to me on phone. The next drama was I wanted to pay for 1 piece of fish separately the young girl didn't understand that when I questioned her she snapped at me spoke to me like a piece of garbage until another lady came over to help. I ordered 2 fish I was charged 3 and they gave me 3 (basa) Whats happened to scales serious this is not good and after the way I was spoken to i think I'll stay away and...
Read moreSo I had a craving for fish and chips. I wanted the best in Coolangatta/Tweed so this is where I was taken to. The place is not unlike many fish & chip shops you see around. But it's really good. You also get the option to select the fish you want. You just choose a fillet, tell them how you like it cooked (battered, crumbed, grilled) and they'll do it for you. Yeah they charge a little more for this service ($5) but you have the option to get local caught snapper instead of cod. The fresh fish is a bit pricey but it is very good quality and most of it is locally sourced. They also serve a decent quantity of salad and chips (fries) with it. Not happy they charge for condiments too given how much I paid for my fish but that can be forgiven because it was good. The meal fed two of us. For $30 that isn't half bad. This place can get pretty popular. There are some tables out the front but if you can't get one why not take your meal down to the beach? It's right there across the road from the shop. Just watch out for seagulls, they'll...
Read moreWe visited Scales Seafoods for a takeaway dinner while staying in Tweed Heads. The concept is great — selecting fresh seafood and having it cooked to order alongside traditional fish and chip items has a lot of appeal.
Unfortunately, the execution didn’t meet expectations. We spent over $130 on our takeaway order, but some items were missed entirely. We ordered a dozen oysters to start, but weren’t given any lemon with them — and since it was all part of one takeaway order, we had to wait until our main items were ready before fresh lemon was provided, which defeated the purpose of having oysters as an entrée.
The prawns were also quite overcooked, and overall the service and timing felt a bit disorganised. While the staff weren’t unfriendly, the experience lacked attention to detail, especially given the price point.
There’s definitely potential here for a great seafood takeaway experience, but for us, it just didn’t quite deliver...
