The Silverton hotel is a remote area icon in Western NSW. Like Broken Hill it’s running on SA time wish is reflected in the laid back atmosphere. The pub itself has its own little world of notice boards and imagery related to the many movies 🍿 n which it has been featured. When owned by the inimitable Chris Frazer it maintained its tiny remote pub ‘charm’ although meals wee not a part of its capability, the Mad Max Interceptor was out front and the numerous movie pub name signed were retained a part of the mystique. Over the latter years the pub has turned towards a more genteel and accommodating style and lost some of its former image. The Interceptor is gone the picture boards have changed and the pub had expanded its ability to accommodate and feed visitors. In 2024 one can visit the historic town, and enjoy some of the original spirit of the pub, and with its recently added facilities enjoy a meal and a cabin for the night. Service at the bar was outstanding when I visited and much of the original atmosphere remains although somewhat diluted by commercial imperatives. Food is adequate but the CAFE up the hill still remains a viable alternative. Menu it limited but staff do their best to provide reasonable priced options in the steak- Parma - seafood basket range if fried foods. Salads represent the rural attitude of minimal but food serving side is adequate if not overly generous. A sign of the times. All country pubs are suffering but this little gem manages to survive and prosper when many others have failed so is deserving of visitors and support. Many thanks to Heidi ( not her real name) from Frankfurt for excellent service and table attention. This place is well worthwhile as a tourist destination on its own right....
Read moreI am giving the pub an overall review of 2 out of 5 which is an average between 5 out of 5 for atmosphere and bar section and zero out of 5 for the food. I’m usually someone who writes good reviews because I like to feel good and share the good, but for once, I have to write this bad review as we were absolutely appalled by the standard of the food. For such an iconic place, they could at least afford to have a chef. We have travelled all across Australia for many years now, and this is the worst meal handsdown we ever had. We have been to several outback pubs, such as William Creek, the Maree hotel etc and the food is always at least good if not great pub grub. This really does not deserve to be called food. At worst, dog food and at best bad canteen food. And to top it up, it was served in cardboard plates! All of it, the main and desert. As a main we had the chef special vegetable lasagne, which was a flat slop mush of some kind with zero taste and the house satay chicken curry, which had no satay at all, but some pieces of chicken floating in some sugary brown sauce that was close to make me vomit. Even hubby who is usually my table Hoover found it difficult to swallow. The portion of rice with it was a spoonful, it was dry and pressed down on the plate to make the portion look bigger. When we saw what other people had in their plates, we can honestly say that they were not just having a bad day. The $45 steak looked like it was boiled. I have no words to say how appalled we were, and how sad we felt for this amazing pub to let itself down in such a way. Hope this gets to the owner...
Read moreMy wife and I recently visited the outback town of Silverton, made famous for two significant reasons. Firstly it was where the very first Mad Max movie was 'shot' on location and secondly (but more importantly) the fantastic pub, the Silverton Hotel. The nearby recreational reserve of Penrose Park is ideal for camping and has powered caravan sites, just a short walk from the historic town and pub. Meals are available from breakfast to dinner in OR out of the bar in a variety of settings but recently the chilly weather made drinks and meals in front of the open fire the obvious choice. Brilliant food at reasonable prices makes for a memorable experience and a chat round the bar with the resident owners can add a delightful dimension. The pub has cabin accommodation built in harmony with the outback buildings of this tiny town. Silverton is a must when visiting Broken Hill. I strongly recommend a visit. The town really has so much to offer, we...
